The new rules for the independent military newspaper are the Defense Department's latest effort to put extraordinary restrictions on journalists covering the agency. n.pr/4dmG2f9
Here's a follow-up (at bottom) to @pressherald.com's article yesterday with texts between immigration and local LEO about protesters and surveillance (read here: www.pressherald.com/2026/03/12/p... )

South and Southwest need to be separated. When people ask what's up with Southwest Minneapolis I always just tell them: "That's where our mayors come from."
Excellent reporting by the @pressherald.com on the ICE surge in Maine this year. Despite official assurances that local law enforcement did not cooperate, the reality belies that: www.pressherald.com/2026/03/12/p...

Beautifully reported and terrifying story. Minneapolis is living what a modern American civil war would look like:
Many Department of Homeland Security employees are on track to miss a paycheck Friday during the nearly monthlong lapse in funding for the agency, leading officials to warn of potential disruptions in air travel if more airport security workers call out of work.
JUST IN: Four demonstrators who still face conspiracy charges tied to ICE protests in Broadview seek records relating to "any improper influence exerted upon the U.S. Attorney's office."
The motion includes a pic of President Trump's image on the front entryway of the Justice Department:
Great story on drone sightings in Minneapolis and ICE surveillance from @jcollins.bsky.social -

"The Pentagon recruiting effort dangles both money and access, offering Wall Street recruits the opportunity to manage “more capital than most investors deploy in their entire careers.” Salaries could reach as much $300,000 at the Pentagon, or $500,000 to $600,000..." www.nytimes.com/2026/03/13/u...
"Instead of selling as prices plunge, some investors now see any drop in stocks as a chance to invest more money at a lower price, profiting from what they believe will be an inevitable recovery." www.nytimes.com/2026/03/13/b...
Some of the unsung heroes of what's happening in Minnesota are those willing to go "on the record" with their experiences. Not everyone can, but people are so afraid of retaliation from feds & it's made it very hard to report on what's happening. So, big kudos for refusing to be intimidated.
Have you seen or heard drones in your neighborhood at night? You're not alone. Story from @jcollins.bsky.social

ICE is not just aggressive in case after case, courts are finding that the agency is operating outside the law. Federal judges across the country are issuing injunctions, and ICE is violating those orders too. Here's the pattern.
One thing I didn't put in story was that a drone expert urged people not to panic. They said that people shouldn't give the government more credit than they deserve (especially in regards to facial recognition tech, etc). Drones looking in someone's window would be a clear 4th Amendment violation.
Lots of people shared their experiences, video & data. I'm never happy not being able to get to the bottom of something. But it's what happens when government officials won't disclose to the public. I'll be doing more work on this, and I'm open to any info. Signal: (8) signal.me#eu/1bUvkuaFR...
Minneapolis folks have been hearing reports of drone sightings for weeks, speculating it's the feds. The challenge is the govt won't confirm/deny. So, we tried to eliminate other possibilities, the three law enforcement agencies in the area all said not theirs. (7)
www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...
This was a weird story to report. It's less about being able to find a definitive answer than profiling the uncertainty people in Minneapolis are feeling, as well as their distrust of the feds after seeing their actions. It's worth reading past the headline. (6) www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...
Drone expert Faine Greenwood, who has studied their impact on civilians in war, said there is very little in U.S. laws about drone privacy or drone data security and that drone/aerial surveillance “functions on multiple levels of psychological intimidation.” (5) www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...
Stevie Glaberson of Georgetown Law on expansion of tech from borders to interior: “[I]t’s this incredibly lawless, unaccountable apparatus that’s being weaponized to police dissent and to target, regardless of citizenship status, people that it sees as enemies.” (4) www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...
ACLU drone expert Jay Stanley says if it is the feds, that the public deserves to know what drones are being used for: “In a democracy, it ultimately should be up to the communities what kinds of powers they want police to have over them.” (3). www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...
The federal government won’t confirm or deny using drones for surveillance in Minnesota. Local law enforcement agencies say the drones aren’t theirs. Lots of residents shared videos, photos and detailed notes of apparent drones sightings in Minneapolis. (2) www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...
A Minneapolis woman who opposed ICE woke up to a drone outside her second floor bedroom window. A man delivering groceries to a suburban distro house for mutual aid recorded a drone hovering above the house. Whose drones and why? (1) www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...
It's hard to watch the journalism industry careen from one magic bullet solution to the next instead of getting down to the basic principles of serving the community, standing up for fact and holding power to account. But worth reading this discussion: share.google/2zYGYBaIsf7d...
"Republicans say that the need to get the Department of Homeland Security back at full strength has become particularly acute now, given the military assault on Iran and the possibility of retaliatory terror attacks." www.nytimes.com/live/2026/03...
A man who was shot by Connecticut police last year and later died had to wait 10 extra minutes for another ambulance to arrive at the scene, after another officer having an anxiety attack took the first one.
Really interesting how the feds appear to have shifted tactics nationwide. This event was notable to me because it appears they are trying to more often avoid these outright confrontations with residents in favor of faster or more subtle detainments.
Cities in Vermont and Maine are experiencing some of the same tactics that ICE has been using across Minnesota since December, and facing lots of resistance.
