Angela releases him, and I get my first look at the photojournalist every woman swoons over. His tan skin contrasts with the light blue of his button-up, the sleeves of which are rolled up to his elbows. His curly black hair and dark stubble give him a rugged look that would make me a little weak in the knees if I wasn’t already sitting.
“I’m so pleased you agreed to join us for this story! This is your partner, Rowan Adams.”
“Pleasure to meet you.” I stand and hold out my hand, forgetting it’s wet from the condensation on the iced latte I set on Angela’s desk.
“Likewise." he gives me the shortest handshake known to man before pulling back and glaring down at his wet palm.

THE first thing you learn as a figure skater is how to fall.
It seems like something you wouldn’t have to learn. If you’re standing on a slippery surface wearing blades three millimetres thick, you’re going to fall. What you’re learning is the proper technique to fall. This way, you help avoid serious injury, and you orient yourself in the right position to get up quickly.
What CanSkate classes don’t teach you, however, is how to recover when you’ve fallen so far you can’t even begin to figure out how to get back up.
Exactly how far have I fallen?
Two thousand, four hundred and forty-four kilometres from my hometown of Montréal, according to the Maps app on my phone. Sitting on the couch of my best friend’s apartment in Florida, waiting to hear back about my audition for the skating show she’s been begging me to join for the past year.
Which was pointless.
To be clear, I don’t mean that my audition had no meaning or purpose. I mean, it had no points.
