Well, if a given person is so pathologically, perhaps deliberately uninformed that they’re functionally incapable of making an informed decision, that right isn’t doing them a lot of good, is it?
I’m mostly playing devil’s advocate here, and I do believe in the right to self-determination, but what does self-determination mean, exactly?
Like, I’m not sure how you can hear about some of the things voters believe and still conclude that these are people capable of self-governance, or of using their votes to rationally advance any interest whatsoever.
Well, a core assumption behind the idea of self-determination is that people, left to their own devices, will make at least some effort to better their own circumstances.
If a sizable fraction of the country is so ignorant and addled as to be basically livestock, that assumption no longer holds up.
Gonna need to fire up the picture-inverter on an almost industrial scale to have any hope of cleaning up this mess.
Whoever keeps telling Democrats they should uncritically adopt Republicans’ framing on literally every issue, all the way down to income taxation, needs to be fired immediately. Preferably out of the biggest cannon we can find.
