Sad to hear about Alan Hassenfeld passing. I was never more nervous than when I asked him to make a big gift to Nowell Academy to enable us to open a top notch childcare center. He graciously did and it’s been transformative for many parenting high schoolers in RI. May his memory be a blessing.

15 ago RI adopted the Uniform Chart of Accounts to track the billions of $ that our school districts spend every year. UCOA is exceedingly detailed and in theory allows for really interesting analyses of LEA spending patterns. Someone should now run those 15 years of data through a massive AI model.

Saul’s gaze lingered on the horizon, searching for Charlie. How he would have loved sharing this novel with him. Or maybe Gloria would have gotten a kick out of its strange villains, so recognizable to the residents of the forgotten coast. But the loss felt familiar to Saul, comforting even.

“Yes, the disappointment stings” Ghost Bird could hear Gloria shouting at Control now as the drugs wore off. Their effect wouldn’t last long on her here. “But what if it was never a ‘book’, anyway? But rather, some kind of message or some… host body to something from… very far away.”

“Had a chance, once, to buy a signed copy of the one book that ever meant anything to me,” Old Jim mumbled to Cass. “Got sidetracked by some damn field op. Came back, it was gone.”

Cass stared at him without responding.

“Probably some Central psy op” anyway,” he muttered.
