I analyze how platforms seem to strategically balance appeals to hypergamy or "high-value" dating with regulations (like FOSTA-SESTA) that constrain how intimacy and finances can intersect online. In short, sugar daters are meeting a growing list of platform bans.

Linking this article because hypergamy does seem to be having a moment. Interestingly, these discourses are cropping up alongside sugar dating bans in app stores, on Tinder, etc. There's likely a reason Seeking (as the author notes) swapped its sugar dating branding for a hypergamy-focused identity.

My (recently defended!) dissertation examines the fraught relationship between sugar dating and the platform economy. One key aspect of this tension is whether sugar dating more closely resembles hypergamy or sex work - an important linguistic distinction online. 1/3
