It had a few nods to Kirby but the '60s aesthetic felt more like Phil Noto or Darwynn Cooke than Jack (not that they're not great). There weren't any Kirbyesque machines to be seen.

I think part of the reason for some of that was to differentiate it from other Fantastic Four films and to establish that it exists in its own universe so that when it's folded into the MCU that they can have the proper Silver Surfer appear and indicate that these realities aren't the same.

I saw the Fantastic Four: First Steps. I did like it quite a bit. Not as much as I liked the new Superman film but it was a solid effort and easily the best FF film to date. I can quibble and nitpick all day about the cast not being exactly like the version in my head but I did enjoy it.

They did a number of retro variant covers--many of which didn't look authentically retro and perhaps they felt needed a sticker to inform the readers of what they were going for. I dunno. I suspect they wanted some kind of unifying element to tie all of them together.

That’s the problem with changing an existing character into something else instead of creating a new one. Had Penance been a new character then both he and Speedball could coexist. Instead he’s one or the other.

And creators get equity in these characters if they're new! Change Bucky into Winter Soldier? The creators didn't see a dime for that--but if they revealed that was all a ruse and he was some other guy all along?

BAM! Now you're talking!

And if I can--my second beef--is creators taking cool characters and changing them completely. What is the point of that? Just make up a new character! You're 99% of the way there already if you're giving them a new costume, power and purpose. New names aren't THAT hard to dream up!

One of the biggest frustrations of working at Marvel and DC is giving them this beautiful gift, which they just put on a shelf and never play with.

I'd have used the shit out of Shrapnel, Cardiac, Lagoon Boy, Kingfish, Powerhouse and the Femme Fatales in Savage Dragon.

Squirrel Girl was pulled from obscurity from somebody who saw some potential but there are literally hundreds more out there.

That's one of the reasons I used Nightshade in that Spider-Man story a couple years ago.

These companies have these incredible toys that they're just sitting on while they use Dr. Doom and the fucking Joker for the 900th time!

Does it frustrate other creators that they gave Marvel and DC these amazing characters that they have been neglecting for decades?

Louise Simonson and Jon Bogdanove created a number of awesome characters on Superman Man of Steel that have been gathering dust for years.

I JUST had an Incredible Hulk cover published. It went on sale Wednesday. My previous Hulk cover was published in 1988.

This is where all of the Snyder Bros jump in and remind everybody that the Man of Steel numbers haven't been adjusted for inflation and I jump in to remind them that this Superman movie is still in theaters and continues to make money.
