We've chosen this piece by Carel Weight RA, who often populated his work with ghostly presences. In 'I Cheer a Dead Man’s Sweetheart', the man on the right appears as a ghost, watching the couple on the left.

We’re delighted to announce a new acquisition for Jerwood Collection: Fruit (1964) by John Armstrong (1893–1972).

This delicately composed still life transforms ordinary objects into contemplative arrangements, balancing realism with quiet surrealism.

With this grant, Jerwood Foundation will also be supporting a brand-new, national initiative, the Jerwood Royal Court Commissioning Scheme, news of which will be shared in November.

Directed by Aneesha Srinivasan, Goddot’s To-Do List is a new short comedy about the absurd chaos of modern existence and will run from 8 May – 30 May 2026 in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court.

Winner of the inaugural 2025 Royal Court Young Playwrights Award and named 2026 Jerwood New Playwright, is Leo Simpe-Asante with his debut play Goddot’s To-Do List.

The first continues to build upon a vital legacy namely the Jerwood New Playwright, which offers production and development opportunities to an early career playwright.

Jerwood Foundation has awarded the @royalcourttheatre.bsky.social a total grant of £200,000 over two years to support two integral writer development programmes that sit at the heart of the theatre’s mission.

In February 2026, Hatton Gallery will open HAPPY!, a major exhibition developed in partnership with Jerwood Collection and curated by L-INK. Over 30 works from Jerwood Collection will be on loan to the exhibition spanning three gallery spaces.

#BornOnThisDay in 1945 was British artist Maggi Hambling. 'Frances Rose' is one of two Hambling pieces in the collection, and marks the beginning of her return to drawing and painting from life, as recommended by Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines, and depicts her widowed neighbour at the time.

'Dig for Victory', painted by Stanley Spencer (1891–1959) and Daphne Charlton (1909–1991) in 1940. The perfect piece for October, the peak harvest time before we transition to winter.

Jerwood Foundation is supporting Jerwood @arvon__ Writer Residencies through its award of a total grant of £40,000. This bespoke talent development programme will give 12 emerging writers the opportunity to bring a project to completion.

Weight often populated his work with ghostly presences and in 'I Cheer a Dead Man’s Sweetheart' featured here, the solitary man on the right appears as a ghost, watching the couple on the left, walking hand in hand.
