We are looking at a large room known as the Undercroft which has central wooden posts that branch out to hold a wooden ceiling (which is also the floor of the Great Hall above). The floor is stone flagged.

Psst early birds. Yes you, put down your toast, we have a mind blowing fact for you! 🤯

The oak trees used in the construction of the Undercroft were felled in 1358. The trees were likely to be 200 to 250 years old. Making them saplings within 50 years of the Norman Conquest!

Poster for an academic event: here is the necessary info:

The Honors College and the Department of Anthropology are excited to present the Spring 2025 Bhatia Lecture, featuring Dr. Kate Franklin. Join us as Dr. Franklin explores the lives of the people of medieval Armenia through an insightful examination of art and historical writing from that era.

We invite you to join us on the Pullman Campus on Thursday, March 27th, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Bryan Hall 305.

So excited to head to Washington State University Honors College next week to talk about #medieval #Armenia, & specifically the lives of medieval folks who built a beautiful world in art even while surrounded by political chaos, & left traces of themselves for an uncertain future to remember

The guy whose daddy bought his way into Wharton, the guy whose grades were so shitty he's never disclosed them – that guy just destroyed the Department of Education. This is what dystopia looks like. This is what Fascism looks like.

Originally built in 1084, the Castle of Rocca Sinibalda (Rieti, Lazio, 70 kilometres east of #Rome) was turned into a magnificent fortress during the late #Renaissance by Architect Baldassarre Peruzzi and decorated with frescoes.

If you are a Northern California person upset about Chuck Schumer’s @schumer.senate.gov ‘s craven betrayal of our country, his book tour will be in Corte Madera at The Book Passage on 3/22

Thanks to @chriswarcraft.bsky.social for the alert, now we know where to visit him in NorCal too 👍🏼

Gutting the Department of Education will impact everything from internet access to school buses.

Part of a page of a medieval manuscript that had a hole cut into it. Underneath it is a restoration of a large decorated B, which would have been in this place, and which was restored by Eliza. The letter emulates the medieval style of script, but the image inside it is in a late 18th century style, showing a verdant tree standing against a green bucolic landscape.

In the 1790s a London woman named Eliza Denyer developed a modest reputation as a restorer of medieval manuscripts. She was forgotten by scholars and, in one case, her restorations were deliberately replaced by a man’s. I recovered her story & tracked all her known work here: tinyurl.com/2ktztx2e

jaz keldi mix The past is the future: a nostalgic mix of disco, funk, soul and pop from the Levant through Central Asia and China

While I was on my Fulbright in Kyrgyzstan last year, I discovered a ton of amazing disco/funk music from Central Asia. Here's a small mix I made with some gems from Central Asia, interspersed with a smattering Turkish, Levantine and Chinese songs

I received the most wonderful gift from my husband today, a first edition copy from 1939 of “The World was my Garden” by Dr. David Fairchild, who is a great botany hero. The copy was originally owned by Victoria Burbidge botanist at Edinburgh Botanic Gardens & at Kew, & Denver Botanic Garden.
