Este Gardner on Ketty's unlawful detention and current status. "Last Thursday, July 31, my parishioner Ketty was detained immediately after her asylum hearing at Federal Plaza. She was following the rules. Showing up to continue her case. She is a 59 year old grandmother who was a baker in Peru when her business was extorted by thugs who threatened death when she couldn't come up with enough money. Against all odds she made it to this country and found our church family. She became a faithful and hardworking member of St. Bart's almost immediately, and we miss her so much. She is now in a detention center in Louisiana. They sleep on the floor. The conditions are terrible. There is constant pressure to sign self-deportation papers, which she is sorely tempted to do. The diocesan team has been very helpful, and Ketty does have legal representation.
