A discovery: if you happened to have this NEC USB2.0 host card in your Windows 98 machine alongside a Voodoo2, you are in for a weird and scary incompatibility problem🤡
Disabling the card doesn’t help. You must remove it physically🫠
And we are back in business🫠
In this economy, I felt like I was in a dream🤪
So this card had the following faults:
- FBI: P8 & 9 bridged
Missing pin (fixed by Simon)
- TMU1: TF_Data 12 & 13 bridged
- TMU0: Solder flake between FT_data
- RAM U14 : I/O 12 & 13 shorted by a thin piece of wire (from wick?)
- Board: R52 Missing
What a mess😂
Then of course, I had to run it in SLI configuration for another few hours just to make sure😌
Somehow all the high density chips were replaced with low ones on this Rev.C card. So I had to populate all the missing RAM chips to give it the full RAM configuration🤔
And then I tested it for a few hours on its own, with success😌
But the same error persisted. I then did a very close inspection and noticed this R52 was missing. It’s a pulldown resistor for a data line, which should be necessary. And that finally fixed the problem.
However, that still didn’t solve the problem.
Mojo gave me these errors, so I had to take a look under the FBI RAM chips. And there was actually one with a problem - a piece of copper wire stuck between data lines.
Turns out, the card had some very tiny bridges. One on the FBI, another on TMU1, as well as a flake of loose solder on TMU0😂
The card would consistently detect, but any initialization would fail with weird inconsistent errors.
Finally got the package of the broken Voodoo 2 from @aergan.com, except the box is so full of memories that the Voodoo is barely visible🤪
The fan inside my 2009 Mac mini keeps getting stuck after years of service. So here’s me spending the day installing Ubuntu and Klipper on a passive-cooled NUC to make sure that never happens again🫠

My friend had to reflash his BIOS blind last week after a mysterious no-boot happened. I guess the nvram can get so corrupted that the damn machine wouldn’t know what to do🤷🏻♂️
Too much is changed or lost through translation no matter how careful the work is done, save for the careless ones🫠 This is why I stopped waiting for English versions of Japanese games and just taught myself Japanese🤷🏻♂️

I had the suspicion first, so there was at least a target. That made things a bit easier. Sadly all the pins on the AGP edge were fine and that gave me some false hope.
You find which pads the BIOS chip pins go to under the core and then find them on the bottom of the core and measure diode value. If it's OL it's bad.
