S.3926, the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Reauthorization Act of 2026, will be marked up in committee next week. It’s a bipartisan act that should be able to pass the Senate without much issue. A comprehensive summary is available below. (1/2)

While the blizzard was hammering the East Coast, we had the planet's first Category 5 tropical cyclone of 2026 Monday, Cyclone Horacio. Topped out at 160 mph winds and 920 millibar central pressure, based on satellite estimates.
Fortunately, it passed well east of Rodrigues Island (Mauritius).
This composite satellite imagery was captured from the JPSS weather satellites using the day cloud phase distinction product. It contains images captured from 16:05 to 17:47 UTC on 2026-02-23.
A riveting view of the dynamic nor'easter swirling just off the East Coast today.

Nor'easters are notorious for packing big wind and copious amounts of moisture they get from the Atlantic. The heavily populated region between Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York and Boston, the 'I-95 Corridor', is especially impacted by Nor'easters.
You're likely to hear the term "Nor'easter" in the coming days.

Additional Details Here.
Strong winds caused the Ranger Road and Stevens fires to experience rapid growth across the Oklahoma panhandle and into southern Kansas, seen this afternoon by the JPSS weather satellites.
The Ranger Road Fire, the larger of the two wildfires, burned over 15,000 acres today.
Strong, gusty winds kick up blowing dust across the Plains and elongate smoke plumes from raging wildfires.
17.02.2026 21:36 — 👍 34 🔁 11 💬 1 📌 2What causes wildfires? A spark, in the presence of fuel and oxygen, can cause a fire, which can further spread depending on various weather conditions. Fires can be sparked by natural causes, but most wildfires in the U.S. are caused by human activity. Natural causes include lightning strikes and heat from the sun. Human activity comes from cigarette butts, fireworks, campfires, burning brush, vehicles and machinery. Fuel is usually dry vegetation, such as grass brush, and trees. Oxygen is almost everywhere. Certain weather conditions can make fires bigger, faster, and more dangerous: strong wind, drought, high temperatures and low humidity.
Gusty to high winds and low relative humidity will bring critical to extremely critical fire weather conditions to the central and southern Plains today into Wednesday. Use caution with any potential ignition sources. Visit weather.gov for the latest.
