Well, at least we know who loves winter around here.

FYI: We're currently seeing a >40% rate of local storm reports (LSRs) regarding hail being cataloged into NOAA's Storm Prediction Center that involve at least 2" hail. That's.... very high... for a thunderstorm outbreak.

That’s a fair question. If someone is seeing a tornado or confirmed damage, that report definitely matters and we want it conveyed.

The distinction is reporting what you’re seeing vs. sharing personal radar interpretation during an outbreak where it is difficult to know the caller’s background.

Dr. Bieda shared an X post from Mark Fox (Meteorologist-in-Charge in Norman, OK) conveying a request for help to major media sources, asking that calls to the NWS should not be about radar interpretation.

Amplifying an important message about what folks SHOULD NOT call an @nws.noaa.gov office concerning radar interpretation during a severe weather outbreak, as #meteorologists at the office are assuredly doing so and it takes time valuable time from such interrogation to warn about actual #tornadoes.

S.3926, the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Reauthorization Act of 2026, will be marked up in committee next week. It’s a bipartisan act that should be able to pass the Senate without much issue. A comprehensive summary is available below. (1/2)

While the blizzard was hammering the East Coast, we had the planet's first Category 5 tropical cyclone of 2026 Monday, Cyclone Horacio. Topped out at 160 mph winds and 920 millibar central pressure, based on satellite estimates.

Fortunately, it passed well east of Rodrigues Island (Mauritius).

This composite satellite imagery was captured from the JPSS weather satellites using the day cloud phase distinction product. It contains images captured from 16:05 to 17:47 UTC on 2026-02-23.

A riveting view of the dynamic nor'easter swirling just off the East Coast today.

An approaching storm will bring precipitation to Pacific Northwest this weekend. Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible across parts of the Southeast today into this evening. A winter storm is forecast to bring heavy snow and high winds to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Sunday into Monday.

Winter’s Fury - Nor’easters: Not many winter storms have the potential to bury 100 million people in 1-2 feet of snow in a single day. Nor'easters are notorious for packing big wind and copious amounts of moisture they get from the Atlantic. The heavily populated region between Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York and Boston, the 'I-95 Corridor', is especially impacted by Nor'easters.

You're likely to hear the term "Nor'easter" in the coming days.
