A pod of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) swimming in a marguerite formation. 4 adults are visible.
A giant squid (Architeuthis dux) swimming near the surface in Toyama Bay. It's skin is mottled red and white.
A pod of sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) swimming. 4 adults are visible and one calf.
Pop culture has this image of giant squids (Architeuthis dux) and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) as these deep sea titans that are locked in battle, but this isn't accurate.
The truth is giant squids are the sperm whale's prey, and they don't stand much of a chance in a fight.
