If Highguard had sold well, how were they planning on building a Fortnite-sized timeline of updates after firing everyone responsible for the game's design, narrative, and programming

Because they see how much money games like Fortnite and Genshin Impact make, and the dollar signs in their eyes blind them.

I don't get why studios are signing up to make live-service games, with plans to ship major expansions every month or two for the next 15 years, when they have no interest in paying any of the ongoing expenses that this requires

Pokémon Red & Green sold poorly in Japan when they launched in 1996, only catching on months later. Apples and oranges, I know, but this is indicative of the shift in how execs at game publishers, streaming services, and Hollywood studios need instant results or they pull the plug. It's unhealthy.

In Mario Kart Wii, the statues on Daisy Circuit are simple, but achieve detail through textures. A stylistic change in Mario Kart Tour/8 Deluxe eschews the textures and attempts to model the details instead, resulting in a much rougher look despite having more polygons.
