When we talk about Baby Boomers not getting off the stage: In 1997, the US president was born in 1946.
In 2007, the US president was born in 1946.
In 2017, the US president was born in 1946.
And next year in 2027? The US president will have been born in 1946.
And for those outside the wage system altogether, it's even worse. If you're disabled and rely on SSI, payments are currently capped at $994 a month nationwide.
*Nowhere* in the country is that enough to afford even a modest one-bedroom apartment.
But it's not just low wages. Work itself—increasingly gigified or contracted out, and stripped of basic benefits—has become more precarious than ever.
For many, the real threat isn't job loss. It's that their job will never pay enough, never provide enough hours or stability to keep them housed.
The numbers are staggering:
Rent is now unaffordable for a record *half* of U.S. renters.
Some 30 million jobs pay less than $15 an hour. The average wage needed to afford a one-bedroom apartment has climbed to $28.17 — nearly four times the federal minimum wage, which hasn't gone up in 16 years.
As alarming as the official Point-in-Time numbers are, the reality is far worse.
Recent research suggests the true number of people experiencing homelessness in the U.S.—including those living in cars, hotel rooms, or doubled up with others—is at least *six times* higher than the official count.
Set for tonight and tomorrow but I could use any help people are willing to offer ❤️

Things take time to reach eyes.

having written about how banning web scrapers from a code forge i host made it usable again and saved ~60€/y in power bill, let me tell you:
you cannot fathom the offloaded cost of GenAI on small web hosts. it is a veritable distributed denial of service to the entire web. Every web admin sees it.
Seems like he might be kind of a charlatan.

when people point back at Reconstruction to explain where we are as a country (a good impulse) its often to claim that Reconstruction completely failed
I'd say it's more like: Reconstruction was partial and compromised, which kept the Civil War going as a domestic political battle vs a won war
My government has a real “we didn’t know starting a war would cause a war“ vibe going on which I realize I should be outraged about in the abstract but find myself mainly nonplussed by at this point.
