As of February 7, 2026, ICE is detaining 68,289 people. 73.6% of them (over 50,000 individuals) have no criminal conviction. Many of those who do were convicted only of minor offenses, including traffic violations.

Adding to how stupid this was, a project focused on the restoration of the Van Ostrande-
Radliff House was flagged as related to DEI because of its goal of
“preserving and celebrating the historic architecture and
culture of Dutch colonial period in Albany.”

Just to be clear: My point is not that they cut the wrong things. My point is they are idiots.

Just to show how stupid this was, a project on Harriet Beecher Stowe's religious writing got flagged as DEI.

This antifederalist also predicted that Congress would be filled with "sycophants and flatterers" of the president. Imagine that!

Proud of my Cato Institute colleague David Bier who stood his ground at a hearing today and talked back to bloviating Sen. John Kennedy (R-Louisiana). David responds to the clip and furnishes receipts. @cato.org

KENNEDY: You said, 'Republicans think can troll their way to ethnic cleansing.' Did I read that correctly?

BIER: DHS tweeted for 100m deportations. That would be ethnic cleansing!

K: You don't think it's hyperbolic?

B: I think advocating 100m deportations is ethnic cleansing. Yes. Your time is up

"Notwithstanding the Love of Dress, Dancing, Equipage, Finery and Folly, Notwithstanding the Fondness for Fasshion, predominates So strongly in the Female Mind, I hope Never to see an American Monarchy"

Among the substantial objections to the great powers of the president, that of his negative upon the laws, is one of the most inconsiderable, indeed it is more a sound than any thing else; For, if he be a bold enterprising fellow, there is little fear of his ever having to exercise it. The two branches of the legislature, will be at his service; no law contrary to his sentiments, however salutary in its operation, dare be mentioned by them. As a body, and as individuals, they will be his sycophants and flatterers.

Come on, this will never happen.

Who can deny but the president general will be a king to all intents and purposes, and one of the most dangerous kind too; a king elected to command a standing army? Thus our laws are to be administered by this tyrant; for the whole, or at least the most important part of the executive department is put in his hands.

Man, the antifederalists were so paranoid.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's bad for the government to demand lists of Jews.

Just a reminder that Muslims have been on this continent since the first arrival of non-Indigenous people. They were among the first generation of Americans, and have been here ever since.

Took my Archives class to Georgetown's Special Collections today. This volume is one of several amazing things we saw. A highlight of my semester so far!
