A copy of the NYRB edition of The Expendable Man by Dorothy B. Hughes

I have @jacquiwine.bsky.social to thank for recommending this astonishing novel by Dorothy B. Hughes: a gripping narrative about a man in the frame for murder that that is ultimately an indictment of America itself. If you haven’t read it, do – but don’t read any more about it before going in…

[Lyn Venable, author of "Time Enough at Last" (If Magazine 1953) and β€œThe Missing Room” (Weird Tales 1953), died on March 31, 2025, at the age of 97. Lyn was surely the last living person to have contributed to both the original Twilight Zone and the original Weird Tales. Last leaf on the bough.]

A man in a suit stands at a microphone which has been mounted on the roof of a van. There are loudspeakers at his feet, and a building behind him. He has an arm raised, and is flinching as projectiles are hurled at him, because he's a fucking Nazi

75 years ago today, The first Peanuts comic strip was published. Peppermint Patty was such a brilliant character, and this is my favourite strip featuring her, from 28th December 1984.

He asked her what book she was reading.
"The Idiot. Do you know it?"
"No. What's it about?"
"It's a novel."
"I'd rather read the truth," he said.
"It is the truth."

World Suicide Prevention Day
10th September

MYTHS and FACTS about suicide

Myth: People who talk about suicide won't end their life, only those who never say anything will.

Fact: People who have thoughts of suicide are often torn between life and death, and can indicate to those around them they need support. People who have done so can still go on to end their life, so it's important they are always taken seriously and given the support they ask for.

Myth: If a person is serious about killing themselves then there's nothing you can do.

Fact: There is always hope. It is rare for someone to be fully decided on suicide. It is important to persevere when offering someone support and help.

Myth: Most suicides occur 'out of the blue'.

Fact: Most individuals with thoughts of suicide will invite others around them to notice they are unhappy or distressed, through verbal or behavioural cues.
Education/training can raise awareness of what these invitations are.

FACT:
Asking about suicide does not put the idea of suicide into someones mind

FACT:
Thoughts of suicide are not uncommon.
1 in 5 adults will think about suicide at some point in their life

FACT:
Suicide is not a selfish act.
In fact, many individuals feel they are a burden to others, and would be doing the right thing for others, by ending their life.
