What book should I read next?
A lot of people gravitate towards "One Simple Trick" accounts of resistance and social change. In part because complexity doesn't make for potent narratives but also cuz folks want to be able to claim a monopoly on impact.
In contrast I believe in a diverse array of strategies:
he also very very clearly has no fucking clue what he's doing and very much needs listen to radicals and learn security culture, as do most libs who are radicalized to the cause
whiniest chronically online lib with a fan club actually touching grass and doing something good does not make him the new liberal lenin nor means liberals are more involved in the stop ice movement than the radicals who have been on the ground for a very very long time
Anyway, security culture and diversity of tactics are good, snitching with cameras is bad. Online celebrities are a risk. Also radicals sometimes over-respond by being nuclear hostile to all normies and believing messaging and public perception are always totally irrelevant.
So like my partner at the time and I went thru a camp and ran across a pile of these normie lib white boys who'd shown up enthusiastically talking to a cop about how "police are part of the 99%" and "we're making lists of the *radicals*, we'll let you know."
The typical story was that anarchists ran the thankless infrastructure necessary to keep camps going, and did the lockdowns or street fighting to defend them from the cops, meanwhile the newbie libs from the internet focused on taking photos with cops and crafting really good tweets.
... because their imaginations are fundamentally captured by the authoritarian system called "democracy" and its mechanism of social change. Getting social media shares and positive writeups from journalists is seen as critical to "winning" in the nebulous sense of getting more voters on your side.
Every normie lib has exactly the same assumptions about How To Do Activism -- everyone should dress nice, pander to media, obey local authorities / laws, disregard security culture -- not just because they've been fed a bunch of lies about nonviolence and the civil rights movement, but also...
Occupy was the first time "people from the internet" showed up in on-the-ground activism, and it so infamously sucked for existing activists that it basically destroyed the counter-globalization era movement.
under no circumstances do you have to hand it to will stancil
BREAKING: The two federal immigration agents who fired on Minneapolis protester Alex Pretti are identified in government records as Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa and Customs and Border Protection officer Raymundo Gutierrez.
would you love me if I was an immortal snail?
I wonder if with enough posting, we could get libs to organize the Wide Awake 2.0
Being “Peaceful” and “Law-Abiding” Will Not Stop Authoritarianism
A Message from Germany
