Starting off as a 16 year old part time worker, rising through the ranks to the top of Canada’s largest union … if you told me it was possible, I never would have believed you. But if I can do it, so can you!

Spending my entire adult and working life serving CUPE members has been the second greatest honour of my life (next only to raising my son). I feel incredibly proud looking back on my journey of 30 years.

I understood very early the strength we had by working together. Those early days and our struggles to win better working conditions for ourselves and better care conditions for our residents shaped the leader I am today. I have never forgotten where I came from!

I first served as a Health & Safety Officer when I was 18 after being forced to work with dangerously harsh chemicals without any PPE. I joined the bargaining committee at 19, became the shop steward at 20 and won the trust of the members, becoming their local president at 22.

30 years ago today I signed my CUPE union card. I was 16 years old, feisty by nature and very nervous. I never could have predicted that would be the start of my life’s work.

We stood together united, determined, and stronger than ever to demand an end to the exploitation and the sexist discrimination of flight attendants all across this country.

At the bargaining table, in the streets and in the courts, we will not back down until our members and workers across this country get the wages and working conditions they deserve.

Strikes are on the rise in this country because workers have had enough. Enough of broken promises, enough of poverty wages, enough of cuts to the services we depend on. Together CUPE and the rest of the labour movement will keep fighting to reverse the trend of falling job quality and job security.
