ONE DAY, A PAPER ON TOLKIEN AS ART CRITIC. it's really very interesting.

By his own description, for Tolkien the world inside the artwork expands beyond the limits of the frame, if only you were able to walk through it. This is a fascinating insight into Tolkien's mode of art appreciation. And totally unsurprising with his Faerie sensibility.

Basically, Tolkien's explanation for why he thinks all pictures need frames (like fairy stories need 'frames') paints its own picture of a man who sees frames as fairy portals or fairy doors, onto another world.

One thing that doesn't get talked about enough in On Fairy Stories is note H, in which Tolkien explains why he likes frames on artworks, and thinks not having a frame on an artwork is an abuse. It's such a weird little thing (one day, a paper on Tolkien as Art Critic) but it is a fascinating insight

I haven't seen it doing the rounds here on BSKY which is odd, because it's blowing up on FB and the various discord servers. Watch this space, this isn't being taken lightly. I personally don't think the Society should suffer as a whole because of poor leadership.

It must be sooooo embarrassing to be a board member of the Tolkien Society right now. What a shame, because the vast majority of members of the Society are some of the best people I know. What a shame to be so spineless and to be taken to task so thoroughly.
