I spoke to the Secretary-General of NATO, Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, Friedrich Merz and Giorgia Meloni.

Together we stand firm in our commitment to uphold the sovereignty of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.

This does also have an EU-UK element. Inviting Starmer is probably a step too far, but close coordination with the UK ahead of the summit should be done, either through Merz/Macron or von der Leyen.

Response so far is likely to focus on at least three elements
- freezing of the vote on EU-US trade deal
- counter tariffs for February in the size of €90bn.
- activation of Anti-Coercion Instrument, allowing for more measures down the road

As I expected, emergency European Council this week. Talk was previously of a video summit, this sounds like a full meeting. The response to Trump will be leaders driven, signalling a willingness to go tough.

Some thoughts on what Trump has done in Venezuela and what it might mean for US national security. Caveat: not a Latin America scholar so this is focused on US policy. Clearly huge consequences for Venezuela that others can address.
