Though I scroll right past the AI results in browser searches, I can't help noticing how poor these algorithms' reading comprehension is.

I'm also very tired of the framing "Some readers say..." or "some sources claim". That's actively unhelpful 😣

Green Dildos and Fragile Egos: Misogyny’s Latest Play in Women’s Sports A crude stunt at a WNBA game with green dildos shows how misogyny hides behind β€œhumor” to demean and distract women at the top of their game.

As someone who has lived my whole adult life in cities deemed β€œdangerous”—NYC, NOLA, and SFβ€”I think a lot about how dense cities require patience, calm, and tolerance in the midst of social difference, which are of course exactly the civic virtues that the right resents being told to cultivate.

Glenda Farrell Talks Again;
Mayor's Job Gets Worrisome

Movie Actress, Blamed For 'Everything' As Official

By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 22-(UP)-Glenda Farrell, who is hesitant about talking to the press because she nearly always talks too much for her own good, took a chance today-and talked.

She told about the long years that her son, Tommy, remained nine years old, She told about her thousands of relatives. She told about all the complaints she was getting from citizens of North Hollywood about the condition of the streets. She even told about how hard it was to travel with a face like her's.

So if you'll promise not to hold it against her-because she's an he okay girl and one of the few really frank ones in town-we'll set down what she had to say about the private life of Glenda Farrell.

Miss Farrell considered first the sad plight of Tommy, the boy who remained an infant as long as he could stand it and finally rebelled. "For years and years," she said, "Tommy officially was nine years old. This didn't bother him at first. but pretty soon he went to high school and started getting interested in the girls. This was natural enough, but here he was, only nine. He finally came to me and said, 'Mother, when can I be my age?' There wasn't anything I could say. Tommy ceased being nine. He's 16."

As for the relatives, they're something of a problem. Miss Farrell's father had 12 brothers and sisters. Her mother had nine.

"And I've simply got thousands of uncles and aunts and cousins," she said. "I love them all, but out at my house there's a swing session going on nearly all the time."

The neighbors don't complain about the noise. They don't dare.

Miss Farrell is the official mayor of North Hollywood, Calif. "It's an honorary job," she said, "It began as a sort of a gag, but it didn't end up that way."

Miss Farrell constantly is receiving kicks about the street paving, the condition of the sewers, and the size of the property taxes...

β€œTorchy Runs for Mayor” (1939) was inspired by Glenda Farrell’s real life 1938 run for Mayor of North Hollywood. She won the honorary job, which soon became more real when many citizens took her title seriously.

Here’s an interview from January 1939 where she briefly discussed this

Kids don't have rights at all.

Wonder where or how a professional organization will say something or step in or just continue as if this isn't a flagrant violation of user rights.

The devaluation of skill, experience, and expertise is a crisis across cultural journalism right now--it's being felt profoundly in theater. It's great that anyone can post a review, but that does not, even in the smallest way, replace what's being thrown away.

I revisited Dorothy Arzner's MERRILY WE GO TO HELL (1932) for Sylvia Sidney's birthday.

There's a moment during the wedding scene where Fredric March and Sylvia look right at us, as if to say, "Yup. She's actually marrying this fuck up."

"A.i." doesn't empower anyone. It strips them of belief in themselves and the power of their own minds and hands and abilities and stories.

EVERY KID CAN DRAW. EVERY KID CAN TELL STORIES AND MAKE COMICS.

Fuck "A.i." for telling kids lies and making them less-than.

Also too: if your school complies with white supremacist demands, you are not getting a good education. You are instead being indoctrinated into a white supremacist conception of the world, which will fail you because it is based on lies and bigotry.
