Perhaps it’s because Fridays are my GBBO watching days but I’ve been on a roll with impromptu desserts. This week: fudgy brownies with chopped pistachios and pistachio cream 💚

It’s prime great-tailed grackle molting season and they all look so goofy.

I don’t hate going to the dentist. It’s a perfectly ok experience. But the music… the music! It’s what I imagine they’d play in the fake good place that’s actually the bad place.

Yesterday I attended a mono silk screen workshop! I’ve been doing so many meticulous linocuts that it was so fun to learn a #printmaking technique that requires you to let go of control. #birds

Did I ever skateboard? No. I’m a scaredy cat who didn’t want to break any bones. Did I watch everything on TV about skateboarding, read any books I could find, and obsess over gear as if I would one day skateboard? Yes.

Marco: “I can’t believe how gullible I was as a child. I believed every special move in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was real.”
Me: “Christ Airs are real. Christian Hosoi invented it.”
Marco: “No way.”
Me: “Skateboarding was my special interest for 2-3 years. Don’t question me on this.”

Howdy! I’m Wren, a Phoenix-based wildlife and botanical illustrator. I am passionate about educating others on the importance of protecting native ecosystems, specially those in my home state of Arizona. Here’s some of my work!

Cuspirostrisornis, an Enantiornithine bird from cretaceous China, sits perched on a branch in the sunlight amid ginkgo and araucaria pines. It has a small yellow snout, black mask, orange back, white belly, and two long iridescent blue tail feathers. It has a fleshy snout rather than a hard beak, and two little claws emerge at the bend of the wing.

A green tortoise beetle climbs downward on a bug-bitten leaf. The beetle has transparent elytra that look like a clear glassy shield over its metallic green and black body.

We got a walking pad specifically for this time of year when it’s far too hot to be outside. I’m like a little hamster that needs to run on a wheel for enrichment or something. So I do my little walks throughout the day. (Don’t worry. The cats are never on or around it when it’s in motion.)

Brown-winged Kingfisher (Pelargopsis amauroptera) a warm brown bird with bright red bill perched on branch from the Mangroves of Sundarbans, West Bengal, India. We celebrate World Wetlands Day on February 2nd, 2025; here is a jewel from one of India’s most diverse wetlands. Title: Penance_10 Brown-winged Kingfisher (Pelargopsis amauroptera) Acrylic on Canvas Size:8x8 inches Location: Sundarbans, West Bengal, India Duration: 66 Hours April 1st, 2019 Reference: Own Reference Sold, Private Collector During one of my birdwatching trips to eastern of India, stumbled upon this jewel. I was most captivated by their habitat; the groves were so densely vegetated, visibility was minimal. However, so many species not only survive but thrive in such tough conditions. Fishing cat is one of them, nocturnal and shy. For this kingfisher, though their bill and frontal body parts are a big giveaway, they shine like a lamp in the thick dark habitat. Here seen sitting in the branch early morning waiting for his next snack, shadows created by the canopy create enough shade for the school of fishes to gather. This provides ample opportunity for the King to hunt. Though early morning, the light was not enough to get my focus right. Had to use one of my torches to light the bird, which enabled my camera to focus, hence the two sources of light on the subject. Done my possible best to depict this magical habitat!
