Aw thanks so much! And don’t feel bad. Our society gives few mobility options other than driving in most places in the country. An EV is better than a traditional car (which contributes more to the climate crisis). We need movements + policy change to transform the car-dependent status quo!

Listening to the 500th episode of @thedigradio.bsky.social and getting extremely verklempt, I don’t think there’s any other outlet that’s kept me pointed due north like this incredible show. I quite literally grew up with it and do not think I’d be one quarter the organizer I am without it

Extraction by Thea Riofrancos is really good—and beautifully written.
It’s refreshing to see a warning about the risks of mining for decarbonization that is neither bad-faith fossil propaganda nor a call for fatalism and hard degrowth. @triofrancos.bsky.social

Schrodinger’s Element | Ajay Singh Chaudhary
In her new book, Thea Riofrancos homes in on the extraction of lithium—and the thorny problem of an ecologically sound energy transition
perhaps thinking about this because of @triofrancos.bsky.social (drawing on Arboleda) on how mining of "critical minerals" is centered on/creating pockets of "Global South" in North America (just one fragment of a great interview with Ajay Chaudhary in @thebaffler.com) thebaffler.com/latest/schro...

Extraction w/ Thea Riofrancos
Featuring Thea Riofrancos on Extraction: The Frontiers of Green Capitalism. The green energy transition requires a vast array of inputs: copper, cobalt, rare earth elements, and the focus of this discussion, lithium—all of which must be mined from the earth. This is a wide-ranging discussion stretching from Chile to Nevada, and from the dawn of colonialism to the geoeconomic conflict between the US and China—and a lot more. In New York City? See Thea discuss Extraction with David Wallace-Wells. Friday, November 14 at McNally Jackson Seaport. Say hi to Dan if you attend! Book cover showing lithium mining ponds in a desert. The title of the book Extraction runs vertically from top to bottom in white text. The author’s name and subtitle ‘the frontiers of green capitalism’ is in yellow text to match the colour of one of the ponds. Behind the book are some blurred out travel pics of me in the Salar de Atacama
My local library got a copy of Extraction from @triofrancos.bsky.social — it starts with a description of the Atacama desert and salt flats in Chile and how a colonial narrative of emptiness justified extraction of mineral wealth. Made me dig out an old photo album from 2002 when I was there.
