Patch birder in East Devon around Seaton and the Axe Estuary. Moths, butterflies, dragonflies and blogging are passions for me too. Love spending my weekends exploring our beautiful countryside with my family, Jess and Harry.

11.02.2026 20:08 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Both Siberian Lesser Whitethroats by Seaton Bowling Green this morning, showing and calling well. Also two Black Redstarts #ukbirding
11.02.2026 08:41 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Think weve got this Greylag today Dave. Really orange-billed (some are much pinkier) and subtle white patch at base of upper mandible . Thanks for that its a yeartick
05.02.2026 12:17 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I feel like this is the big surge following the orginal expansion of a few years ago. Must mean that some of the habitat is still in good nick!
31.01.2026 15:33 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Indeed! Be amazing if they all bred locally
31.01.2026 07:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A drastic and sudden increase in patch Cirl Bunting numbers.... stevesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2026/01/cirl... #ukbirding
30.01.2026 19:00 β π 61 π 3 π¬ 1 π 1Pleased to say I've had much better views of the Seaton Little Gull during my lunchbreak... #ukbirding
25.01.2026 12:51 β π 29 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0All it needed was a bit more effort... Delighted to find an adult Little Gull in the the melee of gulls off Seaton Beach this morning. Couldn't get close to it due to the need of shelter, but hopefully it stays until the rain stops later #ukbirding
25.01.2026 09:29 β π 20 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thankyou so much for the feedback Paul, and thanks for taking the time to read it in the first place :-)
24.01.2026 14:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Despite the excellent numbers of gulls on patch over the last couple of days, and me putting plenty of effort in, I have failed to find any Little Gulls. Highlights have been 2 1w Caspian Gull (today's pictured), a Kittiwake over Axmouth bridge and 44 Med Gulls yesterday #ukbirding
24.01.2026 13:56 β π 16 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks Steph! Apologies for earlier mix up though!

23.01.2026 21:38 β π 43 π 1 π¬ 1 π 2Interesting. I tend to think wildfowl doesn't move until we get some ice, however I guess birds may already be moving to UK from near continent/the low countries
19.01.2026 13:22 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A hint that cold weather is coming? Wouldn't usually expect to see/hear a Golden Plover flying around over Seaton mid-winter.... #ukbirding
19.01.2026 10:46 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Finally the cold weather has moved wildfowl! This female Goldeneye was on the sea off Seaton for about 20 mins this morning before flying off west. A proper patch rare these days! #ukbirding
10.01.2026 11:30 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Ten Black-necked Grebes off the Sailing Club near Sandsfoot Castle, Portland Harbour at 12:30 today (2 displaying to each other which was nice!) plus 4 GN Diver @portlandbirdobs.bsky.social
08.01.2026 15:10 β π 15 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0At least two, possibly three presumed blythi Lesser Whitethroats around the Bowling Green at Seaton this morning. Also six Black Redstarts present, including the male (photographed). 13 Barnacle Geese still on the Axe, with a Merlin and Marsh Harrier yesterday #ukbirding
02.01.2026 14:34 β π 32 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Not the grey geese i was hoping for but still a wonderful Christmas treat today on the Axe with these 13 Barnacle Geese. Surely as good as a Barnie could ever get!? Also 5 dark-bellied Brents with them #ukbirding
25.12.2025 16:51 β π 26 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A feather perfect 1w Caspian Gull on the Axe Estuary this afternoon, first picked up by Phil #ukbirding
05.12.2025 14:59 β π 25 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hi Andy, thanks for that. Two places really. I prefer the road that runs alongside the Estuary between Seaton and Axmouth, as you can stop wherever there are gulls. However when there are lots of gulls on the very upper estuary where it goes around the corner, Tower Hide at Black Hole Marsh best
28.11.2025 08:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Some more good gulling on The Axe... stevesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2025/11/less... #ukbirding
28.11.2025 06:53 β π 24 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Nice to have good views of one of two Lesser Whitethroat first found in Seaton yesterday by Clive. Quietly singing too so clearly a male! Heard it give a bit of a rattle call but it doesnt look that small so presumably a blythi? Lovely bird and showing well near the Bowling Club #ukbirding
27.11.2025 09:02 β π 33 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks Nick. Yes yellow red yellow is an Axe bird. Will pass this on and log it as a resighting. Many thanks

17.11.2025 21:11 β π 27 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Three Blackcap in my garden this morning (2 male, 1 fem). They've not found the fat balls yet but it's good to see them back! #ukbirding
15.11.2025 08:26 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0You've certainly got more chance than me where you are! Good luck :-)
12.11.2025 20:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It might be mild enough for me to get this out (and it really has to be mild for me to do that this late in the autumn!) but there are loads a Redwing and a few Song Thrush going over #ukbirding
12.11.2025 20:07 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Absolutely, thats why I hope it is the same bird :)
12.11.2025 16:14 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This bird looks to have a bit more yellow on the beak to me, although that's comparing an in-hand shot with a distant in-field shot so I wouldn't swear to it. However based on how scarce they are in E Devon the chances are it is the same bird. There certainly isn't one the Axe Estuary any more!
