The British did tend to have open bridges on their vessels up to cruisers (think Battle of the River Plate) which give the crews better visibility but leaves you open to the elements. German ships had armoured conning towers which protect the officers and crew but cuts visibility considerably

The Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen. Only the towers remain. On 7 March 1945, troops from the 9th Armored Division reached the Rhine here and found it still standing. Every other bridge had been destroyed.

The German destroyer Z-33 under air attack by Beaufighters on 9 February 1945 at Førde Fjord, Norway.
The attack went badly and saw 9 of the attacking 31 attacking Beaufighters and one of the ten escorting mustangs, shot down.
The Germans lost no ships

Oberleutnant’s zur See Dithmar & Boldt were found guilty of firing on the survivors but the judgement was overturned because it was deemed that they were following their CO, Patzig’s, orders
As the Leipzig trials were carried out in Germany by Germans they did accept the “Following Orders” position
#otd 1942 the Second battle of the Java sea saw the loss of HMS Exeter (which had served at the River Plate against the Graf Spee) though most of her crew were rescued and made P.o.Ws by the Japanese.
The destroyers HMS Encounter and USS Pope were also lost.

#Otd 1914 HMAS AE1 was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy as 1 of 2 of E-class submarines.
She transferred to Australia & took part in operations off German Neu Guinea in September 1914
