Sweeping censorship is affecting online platforms such as Steam (Valve) and Itch.io. Steam and Itch.io were pressured by payment processors like PayPal and Stripe to remove adult games (and in the case of Itch.io, comics and novels as well). I need to make it clear that this is LEGAL content. It is not only affecting media that is sexually-oriented in nature, but also the horror genre has been targeted. The reason being, payment processors are citing pressure from credit card companies and "banking partners" to censor this legal content. A group from Australia called "Collective Shout" added fuel to the fire by a calling campaign they made to payment processors and credit card companies. https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/australian-anti-porn-group-claims-responsibility-for-steams-new-censorship-rules-in-victory-against-porn-sick-brain-rotted-pedo-gamer-fetishists-and-things-only-get-weirder-from-there/ Mastercard and Visa recently released statements saying they do not block the sale of any legal content (https://www.mastercard.com/us/en/news-and-trends/press/2025/august/clarifying-recent-headlines-on-gaming-content.html). This is patently untrue, especially in Mastercard's case (see Mastercard's rule 5.12.7 regarding "brand-damaging" transactions: https://www.mastercard.us/content/dam/public/mastercardcom/na/global-site/documents/mastercard-rules.pdf) Why is this important if it's mostly affecting games, comics, and books? It is a complete overstep in financial service's role in commerce, and is effectively a form of legislation through their policies. Other platforms that this issue affects include Patreon and Gumroad. There is now an ongoing campaign to pressure these payment processors and credit card companies to reverse their stance on censorship by way of calling, emailing, and writing letters.

Age verification instead will promote the censorship of LGBT and women's reproductive health resources, while simultaneously putting our biometric data in the hands of Big Tech. I want to mention also that this feels relevant to YouTube's new policy to use AI to determine the age of its users. VILE: Exhumed is a game about searching through an old computer, uncovering dark secrets, and experiencing the horrors of parasocial obsession and misogyny. There are references to sexual assault and violence against women, as well as depictions of gore – this was never a secret. This was the point. It was intended to be released for sale on July 22, 2025 on Steam – the largest video game storefront in the world. Instead, it was removed from Steam and banned for sale. VILE: Exhumed was not banned for its use of gore, or its intense themes – themes that are sensitive but many players related to – it was wrongfully banned for “sexual content with depictions of real people.” The game covers topics of assault, abuse, and entitlement, and uses a combination of FMV and practical effects to create images as horrifying as the themes. This was never a secret. There are a lot of intense visuals in VILE: Exhumed, but there is no uncensored nudity, no depictions of sex acts, and no pornography whatsoever – which is one of the justifications bad actors are using right now to censor games. What this actually results in is taking power and storytelling away from women, other marginalized artists, and ultimately, from everyone. This censorship of my work is a direct attack on creative expression and artistic freedom, and it will not stop with false accusations of sexual content. They will come for anything that speaks more loudly than they do. By giving the game away, for free, to whoever wants to play it, I am doing the same thing I set out to do when I started working on VILE: Exhumed, a game about sexual assault, male entitlement, and misogyny. Taking back my agency. No one is allowed to dictate what kind of horror is acceptable, or what stories are allowed to be told.
