I am incensed. This is all so heartbreaking and despicable. The Iranian people do not deserve this violence. We do not deserve this governance. The world does not deserve this. These outrages must end.

On Friday night, n+1โ€”alongside many of our peer nonprofit arts organizationsโ€”received notice that our 2025 NEA grant has been terminated due to the Trump administrationโ€™s โ€œshifting funding priorities.โ€ We knew this might be coming, but receiving the official notice was still jarring, as was some of the messaging itself. Itโ€™s unclear to us whether weโ€™ll still be able to recover the money weโ€™ve been promised this yearโ€”a $12,500 grant meant to help us pay our authors, our editors, and to have the magazine printed and distributed to our readers. Weโ€™ve requested the funds weโ€™ve already spent, and now weโ€™re waiting to see if the money will come through. Weโ€™re trying to stay optimistic, but with the administrationโ€™s other announcement this week that the NEA might be shut down in its entirety, itโ€™s hard to do so.

Iโ€™m writing to ask for two thingsโ€”first, for short-term, immediate assistance to help us replace these funds. You can make a donation through our website, orโ€”if youโ€™re in New York and free on June 10โ€”you can buy a ticket to our annual benefit, the N Plus Ultra. Second, we ask for your ongoing support amid the challenges that we, and other small magazines, are already beginning to face. You can do that by subscribing, of course, convincing your friends to subscribe (or simply sending them a gift subscription), or by buying a bit of merch from our shop. And maybe most meaningfully, you can share the n+1 pieces youโ€™re reading and stay engaged with (and be vocal in your support of) the independent media you care about most. Weโ€™ll need all the help we can get.

With gratitude,

Dani Oliver
Development Director, n+1

They're The Stars Rosie Long Decter writes about Rock Camp Montreal empowering queer and trans youth

Rosie Long Decter (@rosield.bsky.social) profiled Rock Camp Montreal, where girls, non-binary, and gender-non-conforming youth form bands, write music, and perform live, and "where the broader aim is to provide education in grassroots feminist arts and politics."

The slope isn't slippery; the frog isn't gradually getting boiled. Within its first hundred days the Trump administration has openly asserted the right/ power to seize and imprison anyoneโ€”ย including political dissidents, including citizensโ€” and deprive them of any legal recourse at all.

i have no data to quantify this but just vibes wise it seems like popular indie rock has circled back around from the women-led late 2010s (mitski, michelle, phoebe etc.) to 'dudes rock' in a funny parallel of the late 90s to early 2000s... (lilith fair fare to the strokes/killers/monkeys)...
