I started as a Bio major and switched to an odd Bio/CS interdisciplinary degree partway through. So I had more than the usual number of cracks to fall through. Still, I could have fit in a class in linear algebra if I had realized how powerful it was. But nobody said anything and I had no idea.

I somehow ended up with a CS degree without taking linear algebra. Studying linear algebra would have so much more useful than calculus. I ended up having to learn it later on after it became clear that it was a huge hole it was in my education.

Filers who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit are more likely to be audited. You have to have income over $1,000,000 before the rate is higher. Means-testing a UBI-like payment would likely result in the same pressure to ensure complete compliance (a.k.a. to punish the poor).

I enjoy waking up and getting a little packet of Goldfish snacks. They always taste really good after the procedure.

Focus stacking is similar in that it’s a way of overcoming the limited depth-of-field you get with miniature photography. I don’t know if it would work for making a whole miniature scene look real though—I’ve only seen it used for a single subject, like a miniature or an insect.

In general, the goal is to try and get more of the foreground and background to be in focus. One approach is you reduce the aperture (larger f-stop number) to increase the depth of field. Another approach is to move back from the subject and then crop down. Both of these have their limits though.

That’s a cool idea! I’ve used a plain old tray for carrying my armies around between games and never thought to turn it into something more.

I’ll have to give this a try. I’ve used Liquitex Matte Varnish, but haven’t been completely happy with the result—the finish seemed more satin than matte to me.

Medicare doesn’t require a referral to see a specialist*. So the idea that a government-run program would necessarily require referrals is just wrong.

I don’t know what it’s like to treat every interaction in my life as a transaction. But it certainly appears that that’s how Trump functions. So much so that he even assumes that everyone else does the same, only we lie and pretend we don’t. It’s like he can’t conceive of operating any other way.
