The Upper Kellwasser Event as represented by a core from southern West Virginia. To my knowledge, this is the first recorded occurence of the bed in the basinal part of West Virginia!

Here is a big unconformity in KY where Upper Devonian deposits sit on Silurian deposits. This outcrop also shows the complex relationships of facies and time. The Olentangy and Huron Shale here is a full 3 million years younger than the rocks of the same name in Ohio.

Great advances last week. I went to the PA's Rock Sample Library and analyzed a core recovered near Erie, PA in the 1970s. I was able to identify the Upper Kellwasser Extinction event, nearly doubling the area of its confirmed existence in the northern Appalachian Basin!

Here is a look at the Frasnian/Famennian boundary interval that looks quite different. This is one of the more proximal outcrops and the gray and black shale of the Beaver Meadow Member have given way to silty gray shale and thick siltstone beds.

This weathered and unassuming outcrop in Virginia might just well hold the key to linking the Upper Kellwasser Event in the northern part to the southern part of the Appalachian Basin! I somehow managed to pick away at the debris and sample the entire bed.

This is Scott Creek. The first outcrop where the Beaver Meadow Member (BMM) of the Hanover Shale really begins to expand and has different types of black shale beds within it. The BMM is the unit between the Point Gratiot Bed (PGB) and the Dunkirk Shale (DUK).

Collecting core samples through the Point Gratiot Bed and adjacent strata at an outcrop exposure in western New York State. These cores are analyzed at 1 cm intervals to understand the changes in trace metal and organic carbon abundance, and pyrite morphology.

For the past few years, I have been studying the Upper Kellwasser Mass Extinction Event in the northern Appalachian Basin. It is represented by this thin black shale called the Point Gratiot Bed, named for this exposure at Point Gratiot along the Lake Erie shoreline in NY, USA.
