Spellbound Stitchery Needlepoint

If you know me or watch me on TikTok you know that I love a good red lip. 💋 Red lipstick has long been associated with the struggle for women’s rights and during WWII it also became a symbol for victory over Nazism (as it was hated by Hitler.) babel.ua/en/amp/texts...

This design woke me up in the dead of night, and while I lay in bed I quickly counted how many letters were in the word “freedom”. When I realized it matched the same number of letters as there are days in a week, I jumped out of bed and got to work designing.

My needlepoint design - “freedom” stitched and finished with sequins. The ability for women to choose how many children they want and when to have them - if at all - is a human right. It is also central to women’s empowerment, reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development.

Craftivism really helps when coping with distressing current events. It gives the “fight” response (of fight or flight) somewhere to go. If you have something to say through your craft, say it. Stitch it. Sew it. Share it.

Textiles and fiber arts have played a bigger role in the political conversation than most appreciate.

They don’t tend to reach “new” people, and I also can’t post anything longer than a minute and a half. It’s also just a different vibe. But I plan to try with them more!

I know that there are other avenues to build community and build an audience. But there was something so unique about TikTok and its ability to reach POTENTIAL needlepointers as well as long term needlepointers.

The question I keep asking myself, over and over, is “how do we reach new stitchers now?” “How do we find the people who might be interested and just don’t know about it yet”

Creators like myself were sharing tutorials, finishes, projects we were working on, and resources for beginners. People were jumping into the craft who might have not learned about it otherwise.

Two, a loss of opportunities to expand the craft of needlepoint. One of the reasons the industry swelled so much in 2024 is because of the attention TikTok brought to the art form.

One, a loss of income due to a loss of attention and interest and interaction from people who enjoy needlepoint and who might not otherwise see my designs.

Allow me to vent my worries here for a second (scream into the void, whatever) but the loss of TikTok feels so visceral to me for two reasons:

The "slow breathing to convince your body that you are not actually in physical danger" thing actually kinda works, y'all.

My go to fix for sadness - Ted Lasso, cheesy pasta, and needlepoint. 🥰

I just need y’all to know - the silly can be sacred.

I plan to start over on new platforms, and continue to nourish other platforms where Spellbound has a presence. But it’ll be like starting over.

This is so silly but I feel DEPRESSED at the thought of tiktok going away. The community built there - unmatched. My ability to reach new needlepointers, answer questions about stitching, reach audiences with my educational content, and share my art with the world felt so easy and effortless.

I have had this Dark Florals Iris kitted for a while and today is the day to get a new needlepoint WIP ready to go! I am really excited to stitch this needlepoint project over the winter break! Maybe i will have it finished by the time the irises come up in my garden. #needlepoint #fiberart

I am partway done with my first ever needlefelting project and I am having way too much fun stabbing the wool over and over to create this tiny sculpture. I am adding a layer of alpaca wool strands to the sheep’s back to make the sheep look extremely wooly! #fiberart #needlefelting
