It's only the 12th January, and I've already attended and presented at a 3-day conference, submitted a fellowship application and sent off a job application. Wish me luck - 2026 is going to be full-throttle 🏎️.
Final Registration for the VMSG Annual Meeting 2026 is fast approaching. Abstract deadline has been extended until Friday 8 Dec. We aim to inform registrants of their presentation type (talk/poster) & time slot by 12 Dec.
We look forward to welcoming you all to Southampton!
Focus on volcanic hazards and risk mitigation since the 1985 Armero disaster:

Including the following content (1/8):
Excited to see our paper out in @natgeosci.nature.com this week! 'Lessons from 40 years of communicating volcanic risk during crisis'.
In it we reflect on our progress for volcanic crisis communications since the devastating 1985 Nevado del Ruiz eruption, and identify where challenges remain.
Seems like an usual move that would allow the IAVCEI President to hold office for an indefinite period. I’d encourage all IAVCEI members to read carefully and vote in both these polls.
Working on risk? Why not join the Risk KAN steering committee. It's really nice opportunity to work with people all over the world that also care about risk who maybe you might not otherwise engage with. Come and join us!
New episode of @disordershow.bsky.social interviews our Executive Director, Ruth Richardson, on interconnected risk.
Recorded during our symposium,
@janekinninmont.bsky.social also speaks with the fascinating @laramani14.bsky.social & @catalinajaime.bsky.social.

Don't forget to sign up for our hybrid seminar with Michael Puma (Columbia Uni.) tomorrow (3rd) from 5.30-6.30 BST on 'Hidden Correlations and Systemic Risk in Global Food System Vulnerability' www.cser.ac.uk/work/3-septe...
Thanks to @laramani14.bsky.social, @catalinajaime.bsky.social and Ruth Richardson at @asranetwork.org for speaking to me about their amazing work at the Currents of Change symposium earlier this summer. Lots of useful food for thought for us at @una-uk.bsky.social.
Join us on the 3rd September online or in-person for a seminar from Michael Puma, Professor of Climate and the Director of the Center for Climate Systems Research at Columbia University on "Hidden Correlations and Systemic Risk in Global Food System Vulnerability". Link below! 🌱 🌍 shorturl.at/DzNuB
At IAVCEI? Come here me talk tomorrow about systemic risk response to globally disruptive eruptions in Session 6.1 - 9.30-9.45 in R290 and come visit our outreach stand from 15-17.00! #IAVCEI2025
Well done team!!
Last night we brought together risk communicators at the Society for Risk Analysis conference in Stavanger, Norway, to launch a new network, 'Joining Forces'. It aims to bring together the risk comms community working across domains & sectors to build a community and share best practice.
The @riskkan.bsky.social team at the @asranetwork.org symposium on systemic risk in Les Fontaines! @janasillmann.bsky.social & Pia-Johanna Schweizer. Pia & I will be Co-Leads for the new working group on systemic risk, catastrophic risk& polycrisis, & Jana co-leads the WG on climate risk modelling.
Just a note on a small error in my name! :)
Meet the panellists for our 13 June online Standing Up for Science workshop!
👉 Researchers will share experiences working with the public, media and policy
👉 Journalists & policy pros will bust common myths about how their worlds work

We're excited to be co-organisers for Niigata University’s 1st International Symposium on “Volcanology in Practice,” to be hosted in Niigata, Japan, from 7-10th October 2025, organised by @farquharson.bsky.social. Abstract submission & registration are open now! www.thevolcano.world/index.html
8th May is the anniversary of the 1902 eruption of Mt Pelee, Martinique, which led to the loss of over 28,000 people in the town of St Pierre. The eruption remains one of the most deadly historical eruptions to date & shows the importance of focused preparedness and early action ahead of crises.
Today marks the 4th anniversary of the explosive phase of the 2020-2021 St Vincent eruption. Effective monitoring, good coordination, extensive education campaigns and efficient communications contributed to the successful evacuation of over 20,000 people with no recorded deaths.
Hey volcano folk, @vmsg.bsky.social is now on LinkedIn - follow for updates 🌋https://www.linkedin.com/company/volcanic-magmatic-studies-group-vmsg
Such a fun (and sticky!) weekend spent running lava modelling workshops as part of the Magma Rising exhibition at the @heong-gallery.bsky.social @downingcollege.bsky.social Cambridge for @cambridgefestival.bsky.social. Love seeing how excited others are to learn about volcanoes and our science! 🌋
This might be the best backdrop I've ever had for talk! I had so much fun talking about global volcanic risk and resilience as part of the Magma Rising exhibition @heong-gallery.bsky.social @downingcollege.bsky.social. Make sure you check out this excellent exhibition until 22nd April. 🌋
I'm keen to speak to as many people as possible during this programme to understand how we can benefit our community the most and for potential collaborations! Feel free to drop me a message if you're keen to chat or to learn more about GVRA!
Excited to be part of the UKRI ARC Accelerate cohort for 2025 which will allow me to spend the next 6 months focused on the development of our new charity @gvra.bsky.social!
I can highly recommend watching 'Asteroid Hunters' to learn more about this community! www.youtube.com/watch?v=uW-P...
From a GCR perspective, it's great to see the hard work of the planetary defence community come together to respond to this risk. This is an extremely capable community, and they clearly demonstrate the need for global cooperation in the face of extreme risks (lessons for other GCRs).
Here's a great paper on the role of these two groups and how they'll be working now: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Asteroid #2024YRN discovered at the end of 2024, has a very small probability of striking Earth in 2032 (~1.2%). IWAN and SMPAG (UN-endorsed asteroid reaction groups) have been activated to monitor and assess the risks.
And we tick closer… it’s now 89 seconds to midnight on the Doomsday Clock. The closest it has ever been to midnight.
