I’ve spoken a fair amount about theories of taste & said years ago that gen-AI is not really a crisis of creativity but a crisis of taste. What I’m noticing is that novices using DL tools feel that by prompting (essentially a form of client commission) they rely on a “skill” called taste for quality

The "Can we just admit that LLMs are useful?" argument that these people deploy is one reason why I'm skeptical that they are useful. If they're useful, you can use them, regardless of what strangers think.

my partner and i were talking about really missing Real Life mag this week. what site or print publication should we subscribe to for that kind of cultural criticism, rather than news, around tech? maybe just n+1?

The packaging waste, the destruction to our social fabric, the unhealthy use of substances alone, the hollowing of our city centres, the monopolization of our needs by tech delivery middlemen and chains, we can address all of these

Tweet from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz:
Justice has been done.

I welcome the decision of the Chief Military Prosecutor, Major General Itai Ofir, to close the Sde Teiman cases against IDF soldiers and to cancel the indictment against them.

This trial was born in sin by the previous Military Advocate General, using a blood libel against IDF soldiers and criminal investigation methods, and I am glad that justice has been done and the trial has been canceled.

The role of the IDF's legal system is to protect and safeguard IDF soldiers who engage heroically in war against cruel monsters, and not the rights of the terrorists of Hamas.

I am convinced that the decision will lead to a new path.

The Defense Minister of Israel says it was "blood libel" to go after Israeli soldiers caught on camera raping a Palestinian.

Episide 365 – Untangling Canada’s response to Iran In this episode, Sandy and Nora talk about the Liberals, NDP and Conservative reactions to the war in Iran. Plus, AI sucks and what is with the return to normative gender roles?

New episode of Sandy and Nora! It's a good one. We talk about the confused, bizarre, pathetic and not-good-enough responses from Canadian leadership about the war on Iran.

In my opinion, Labour are failing to deliver their promised ban on conversion therapy because any legally robust definition of it would show that the NHS are doing it to trans people, and implicate this government in the practice. 4/5

good thing they left in the same obnoxious warning popup that video files they let you play right in the browser are too big to scan for viruses when you download them, i would hate to see that extra click go

you know i would maybe forgive them ruining the UI if they simply added a “make a copy” button to save directly to my own shared google drive, since that's what i want to do with these anyway. but no, you can only “add a shortcut” which I specifically do not want to do!

I'm used to gmail presenting links to numerous files instead of actual attachments on behalf of people sending me gallery submissions, but it seems to have a new feature where people sending me files get a mix of both behaviours, sometimes linking to files that aren't actually even shared with me

When Claude (who is a fictional character and does not experience anything) says “I am suffering” it’s because “suffering” was an excellent choice for the next token which causes the LLM inconceivable joy.

exercise: swap "AI psychosis" for "monomyth psychosis" because that seems to be the narrative leverage the bots default to in the process of destroying people. what does it mean that these machines produce the form over and over? what does it indicate about the cultural centrality of that template?

Sandy and Nora talk politics Canada's best political podcast

Check out my conversation with Tanille Johnston, one of the five candidates running to be NDP leader!

I'm really impressed by Tanille and I think that it's too bad that money didn't flood into her campaign like it did into Avi's.

mutual aid can't fix this, only the state can. and it's a criminal act, class war, that basic housing is non-existent for those without the means (physical, mental, or otherwise) to make it happen for themselves. they become street detritus instead and we all suffer for it.

turns out lacking the most basic thing in life, a consistent place to sleep where your shit is not being constantly stolen nor raided by 3rd party actors, makes you go fucking insane. it destroys you. it makes you want to die. you losing your glasses becomes a reason to throw yourself in the street.

On the photo radar question, my anecdotal observation is that, with it gone, most in Edmonton are driving at 10km/h above the posted limit now, minimum. It's the new base speed.

I rate every room in White Plume Mountain (X out of 5 Stars) and explain why each room does, or does not, work and how you can take these lessons into designing your own dungeons, be they of the funhouse variety or not

The schools changed a lot of policy to mobilize police to remove those encampments and prevent them from reoccurring. the organizers were arrested and exhausted, and the atmosphere that permits a camp to slowly establish itself is simply gone.

Sedgwick’s prescription is “reparative reading,” a theory of more flexible sense-making that can hold truth and provide an antidote to the overwhelming paranoia of our times. While the conventional wisdom states, “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean you don’t have enemies,” Sedgwick turns this formula on its head: “Just because you have enemies doesn’t mean you have to be paranoid.” Or to put it another way, having a direct understanding of systemic oppression (the healthcare system, police violence, the fascist state) does not condemn a person to a categorically paranoid point of view. To practice a worldview more expansive and more open to possibilities than paranoia does not mean you have to deny the reality or gravity of oppression.

Feeling paranoid about stochastic violence and weaponized media? Me too. That's why I can't stop thinking about this incredibly helpful essay by @littlewow.online in @flaminghydra.com about the idea of "reparative reading" as a corrective to the "paranoid style." flaminghydra.com/issue-511/

Prediction markets, like crypto, like AI, are simply just another large-scale expression of COVID trauma among the mangerial class and now they're using them to turn a fucking war into a pyramid scheme they can scam each other into investing in.
