In general I am very skeptical of meta-historical narratives, because they always end up as a gross over simplification of hundreds of unique complex events.

Basically it gets the story of Rapa Nui and the Greenland Vikings completely wrong. Neither collapsed due to overdrawing their own environmental carrying capacity. Rapa Nui collapsed due to smallpox, colonialism and slavery, and the Greenland Vikings died out because the Black Death inhibited trade.

I take it this is better than the widely-discredited “Collapse” by Jared Diamond?
