Proposed shark net near Club Med resort in South Africa sparks conservation clash On Feb. 13, a juvenile humpback dolphin was caught and killed in one of the many nets strung up off the coast of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province to protect beachgoers from sharks. The incident, ...

"Other provinces in South Africa and places such as Australia and Réunion, an Indian Ocean island administered by France, increasingly use **nonlethal approaches**, including shark spotters, drones, exclusion barriers and smart drum lines that allow captured sharks to be released alive." 🦈

I've been told that Ken Sim told his team that a stranger waived a physical photo at him during a Chinatown event and falsely claimed that it was Orr dealing drugs on Christmas Day.

The mayor doesn't remember the specific contents or style of the photo, and can't remember who showed it to him.

Gone in five minutes: After (very) brief appearance, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim leaves more unanswered questions After days of dodging questions, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim appeared to want to clear the air. Unfortunately, he didn't.

"The news conference began at 2 p.m., and by 2:05 p.m., the mayor had disappeared. Journalists and other observers present were baffled."

Chickadees mostly focus on the sunflower seeds, but now and then they snag a peanut from the feeder - what a prize! #birds #FeederWatch 🌿

I know it is easy to doomscroll, especially today. Please plan for yourself at least one or many more offline activities. Buy a pastry, read a book, go to a museum, see a friend, cook a meal, play with a pet, or even a trip to Costco. Try to limit time on your phone and avoid stewing in anxiety.

In about 3 minutes, the Mayor of Vancouver said β€œI spoke with Councillor Orr & apologized for my comments” 16 times. That was his answer to every question about why he claimed Sean Orr had handed out illegal drugs to people on the street during Christmas.

When I spoke to ABC Cllr Lenny Zhou this week, I asked him whether he had posted a retraction & apology video in Mandarin on WeChat, the app where his video spreading misinformation was originally posted. He hasn't done so, days later, as far as I know. It's not enough to quietly delete the post.

We've asked Ken Sim for a response to this, along with a question as to why he said in a statement that Lenny Zhou was "taking responsibility for sharing information that was not accurate."

I'll let you know when or if we hear back.

Today, we learned the misinformation
Councillor Lenny Zhou cited in the WeChat video, which was the topic of the February 24th press conference, may have originated from Mayor Ken Sim himself during a roundtable with Chinese-language media earlier this month:

Message in a Bottle by Holly Hogan | CBC Books A story about how the central threat to the diversity of marine life is ocean plastic.

I read this excellent, sobering book about ocean plastics last year and recommended it to anyone wanting to understand the problem better.

The problem of plastics pollution always feels so overwhelming and impossibly to me. While the most effective thing most of us can do is simply reduce consumption, it is so heartening to see research like this making progress.

Waterloo researchers turning plastic waste into vinegar | Waterloo News Researchers at the University of Waterloo have discovered a way to turn plastic waste into acetic acid, the main ingredient of vinegar, using sunlight. The breakthrough offers a promising new approach...

"When exposed to sunlight, the material drives a series of chemical reactions that transform plastic polymers into acetic acid with high selectivity. The reaction takes place in water, making it particularly relevant for addressing plastic pollution in aquatic environments." 🌊
