If you are willing to expand your sampling strategy to include German shows, I can point you to some in the lower left quadrant.

I didn't know that, but the actor-agent transition fits quite well with private SC over the I-X repertoire! As for the author, I'm not sure, I would probably argue that narrative coherence is something that might emerge, but not foundational/necessary for strong PF.

I propose a behavioral conceptualization of personality functioning (PF) that reframes the construct in terms of learned self-related repertoires rather than inferred inner structures.

Good point and makes sense to think of skills-based assessment here! From a behavioral perspective, it would focus on the stability, generalization and stimulus control of e.g. self-description, emotion labeling, goal articulation across contexts. That could nicely complement existing measures.

I would argue that healthy PF is not the absence of conflict. Even under healthy PF, such motives can occur and be conflicting, but they are under private SD, can be held simultaneously. Whether they are under private SC is key here.

One I-X repertoire ("I want to be close to that person") is under reasonably good private SC, a competing repertoire (withdrawal) is under public/historically conditioned control, shaped by past punishment of seeking closeness. This is experienced as conflicting, partly opaque or confusing.

Thanks, very important points that add a layer of complexity. I actually agree and think knowing when to weight what is key here. Your example sounds as it could be framed as competing stimulus control histories, something that I didn't really address in detail.

While it is not my goal to displace existing theories, in my opinion, this view preserves key PF features (identity stability, intimacy, empathy) while making mechanisms explicit, testable, and modifiable via learning processes rather than latent inner entities.

The behavioral tradition of self-functioning reaches back to Skinner himself, followed by Kohlenberg & Tsai. I conceptualize the self as a learned repertoire of "I-X" verbal behavior under private vs. public stimulus control, which leads to a single developmental continuum of self-functioning.

PF is central in current models of personality pathology (DSM-5 AMPD, ICD-11). It is based almost entirely on psychodynamic theories. I asked myself: can we retain what is useful about the concept within a strictly behavioral framework?
