FWIW in contemporary Q methods I saw some kind of prototype flagging, which can then be followed up with, e.g, interviews to establish this. But that's basically adding another type of assessment.

I completely agree that virtually all these approaches that work with psychometrics alone lack this aspect of functional or mechanistic explanation. I also doubt that this can be resolved by switching from one statistical model to another.

You are essentially describing a Q-sort, right? Then you have basically generated data for which clustering works.
