It takes some really special reasoning to think that somehow Portland is covering up heinous violence in heavily surveilled areas and that, if there were such a thing happening, the administration wouldn’t be plastering it everywhere.

If Portland electeds are “covering up terrorism” at the ice facility, wouldn’t that also mean that ice is covering it up? They have tons of cameras running at all times… not to mention this age of everyone having cell phones and there literally being no way that that kind of thing could be hidden.

Different kinds of effectiveness (diversity of tactics, a hill I will die on!). The main point I always pushed about black bloc to the libs in my life is: if they weren’t there to be the front line, the rest of us couldn’t be there without risk of serious harm.

Just to follow up on the joy part: I think Joy is essential to our resistance. If we don’t have joy, we’ll burn out. We need to mix joy with the work as much as possible. Portland is putting on a masterclass on this right now. Just think how many people got excited over the frog and others. 🐸 🎉

That said, as others have pointed out, this needs to be one strategy among many. By itself, absurdity does very little except give us some joy and comic relief. Together with actual legal and policy pressure, I think it can be effective due to more public support. We need more Angelitas to back up!

I wanted the general public to know that there was way more than just the bloc at these events, and people they could relate to. I think this is effective in moving public perception, as we see right now. Hard for the admin to appear tough standing opposite twerking inflatable animals.

I’ve been a big proponent (and doer) of absurdist tactics for a long time now. The original reason was because the media would only show black bloc when there literal 1000s of other people there (I’m mostly referring to patriot prayer counter demos).

I saw a few posts celebrating this yesterday. Dude says they will protect protesters with “protective crowd control”. I’m not sure he’s saying what people seem to think he’s saying. Sounds exactly like when the police have said things like this, and we all know how that went.
