twitch.tv/dot_lvl i'm live! i'm going to do some retro gaming but also! discord announced some really silly changes and i've been thinking we should talk a little bit about how the community should change anyway so! let's have a little chat session about that too!

legit, even as much as everything has changed, the fighting game scene is uniquely tight-knit and i think riot might be surprised at how much it backfires to hire beloved figures in the scene and then fuck them over as soon as they're done with them

i dont think one thing should replace discord, i think like three things at minimum should replace discord. it being an All-in-One app has ruined so many parts of online.

for clarity since this has gotten retweeted a little bit (which i don't mind): i'm talking about my own personal community which is largely (but not entirely) centered around my stream. so "discord alternative" in my particular case doesn't really mean just another service with the same structure

like genuinely we do not need them. we've got almost 800 people on our server and it's full of linux nerds, web developers, etc. this goes for every stream discord i know of. we have the agency and knowledge to create our own fun on the internet. it's discord that holds us back

i'm not gonna catastrophize about this, especially because i think they're going to back off when they lose tons of nitro subs, but i'm not going to continue to let discord be a load-bearing pillar of my community either. it's time for us (like, the dot stream community) to look for alternatives
