Bullet up the Grand Trunk Road by Jonathan Gregson is an entertaining travelogue of crossing India on an Enfield Bullet, bringing in the historical context around the partition and the intercommunal volience.
Worth a read.

It started with Thatcher.
But what was going wrong already that enabled La Vache to come to power?
And we shouldn't overlook the ownership of the press in all this

Thanks, Ronan. That's great. That works. I am v relieved.
However, I was trying to do this on my PC desktop rather than my phone.
And clicking on that link on PC takes me to BBC Sounds, (with the banner advising it will be replaced)
Hence my frustration/confusion.
It still sends me there now.

Thanks. That's what the site says but I have been looking through and clicking around all and yet to find anywhere where Radio6Music is available on BBC.com.
BBC.com>audio>radio currently only shows links to BBC World Service and Radio 4.
Unless something changes... or I'm missing something...

Check out the great Noah Gil-Smith, 'a celebrated travel guide author known for his extensive explorations and vivid storytelling.' Surely one of our greatest living writers β he's got 647 books to his name! Don't forget to check in tomorrow though, he'll have added a couple of dozen more...

βKJ Smithβ is genAI, right? Dozens of books in a few set formats, all published in 2025? I listened to one and it sounds just like ChatGPT β bland summary, little detail about any of the events mentioned, constantly drifting into corporate mission-statement vocabulary, no thought behind the phrases

The Asphalt Path
A couple, through no fault of their own, are thrown off Birminghamβs No 11 Outer Circle bus and resolve to complete the circuit by foot.
In doing so they have the spiritual awakening of spending half the journey walking towards Solihull, and the other half walking away.

Some thoughts on the #TheSaltPath scandal, especially for those who write books in that general neighbourhood (the nonfiction ones with the faux-woodcut covers, shelved under "nature" even if they probably shouldn't be). π§΅1/

My pet theory that as England hadnβt been invaded for 1000 years there was never a foreign culture to rail against, and no necessity to fiercely hold on to own cultural identifiers in the face of subjugation.

The UK is very good at taking on board other culturesβ best bits, messing around with them to suit, mashing them up, making them our own by creating new and special. Especially music and cuisine, as someone else had mentioned. Chicken tikka masala, an invented dish, becomes a national icon.
