thesis supervisor said that he's optimistic that if I finish the bulk of my work until the end of February, I can submit a paper to Interspeech, and if it gets accepted there I could go to the conference in Sydney next year 🥰

i don't need an ai to make flashcards for me, i don't need an ai to find a teacher for me, i don't need ai in my language learning at all and frankly i find it insulting to make something as inherently human as language learning to be so ai centered.

@italkioffical.bsky.social idk why you thought it was a good idea to make your entire brand suddenly shift focus from human intercations to a stupid ai no one asked for, but i can tell you that you were wrong. no one wants this. just because you can put an ai somewhere doesn't mean you should.

Just opened Italki and got the new design. Absolute trash. Half the screen is a useless chatbot now. Just write a damn FAQ! And there is a second one on the same page? I did recommend Italki before, but I don't think I will anymore. The AI ads before were bad enough, but now it's borderline unusable

do you ever just look at the language you're learning and pouring all your free time in and it hits you that you'll never use it in a professional setting, you'll never live in the country, you won't even be able to travel to it regularly, and you won't ever use it for anything other than consuming-

anyways the next few months while i do my thesis & then hopefully my working holiday i'll have to do a lot of soul searching lol. i still don't have even the slightest idea of what i want to do professionally after uni. or rather, the things i want to do i'm not qualified for.

i also want to be fair to myself, in that when i started my masters degree, the first version of chatgpt wasn't even out (it came out a month after the semester started). people talked about ai as something we might improve in the far future.

doesn't make me like nlp any more but at least it's a posive outlook on everything

i really liked his perspective on it though: ai is here to stay and will only improve, whether we like it or not. at least if we work in the field, we can make sure it does as little damage as possible.

i had a conversation with bf about how much i regret being in nlp... my goal was always to work with languages, and instead i ended up in the field that is developing ai to steal jobs from people wanting to work with languages.

man the requirement for nlp jobs is really either

have 14 years of professional experience with python, java, rust and one more programming language, have developed your own architecture for llms, be the ceo of openai and speak uzbek fluently

or

speak german and english, know what a prompt is
