June 2, 1983:
Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers died in a fire aboard Air Canada Flight 797 in Cincinnati. Born in 1949 in Hamilton, his music blended Canadian history and culture. Today, he is celebrated as one of Canada's greatest musicians.

Joseph and George gave their lives to defend Canada, while at home their family worked in war industry and purchased war bonds.

George Hong died on 8 September 1944 and is buried in Ancona War Cemetery; his epitaph “SO THAT ALL PEOPLES MAY LIVE IN PEACE AND FREEDOM. BORN WINDSOR, ONTARIO, CANADA” He was 19. We will remember them.

Joseph Hong’s brother, George, was serving with the West Nova Scotia Regiment in Italy, after recovering from wounds received earlier that year.

Joseph Hong is buried in BRETTEVILLE-SUR-LAIZE Cdn War Cemetery with his crew. The inscription on his grave “UNION OF A CHINESE HEART WITH A CANADIAN SPIRIT”. He was 20

Nickel raids like this were used to provide experience to crews and distract German defences from larger raids. Also killed were F/O DW Goodwin, F/O CB Wyckoff, WO JG Jacques, Sgt DW Harris and Sgt J Hopper

He joined 24 Operational Training Unit as a navigator and was a member of a Whitley bomber crew. On the night of 23/24 May 1944 his aircraft was lost on a “Nickel” raid to drop propaganda leaflets.

Joseph Hong joined the RCAF in August 1942 at the age of 18, leaving a job at the Windsor Star newspaper as an advertising salesman. Training at Mont Joli, Lacome and Victoriaville, Quebec followed; he proceeded overseas in November 1943

As Asian Heritage Month in Canada comes to an end, the story of Joseph Hong deserves to be told. F/O Joseph Hong from Windsor, Ontario, died this month in 1944 flying a mission to Alençon in Normandy.

Great picture! They are part of First Canadian Army, and are troops of the British 49th West Riding Division. The polar bear patch on their uniform was adopted after their service garrisoning Iceland in 1940. 49th WR Division was part of the First Canadian Army from Normandy to the end of the war.

A great set of SWW OS maps that once belonged to Lt-Col GM Carrie, OBE, the founding force behind the survey capability in the Cdn Army. Ten volumes cover the UK (England and Wales) in swaths that run from the south coast to Manchester. He commanded the 1st Survey Regt RCA and later worked at CMHQ.
