New and competitive renewal awards
Fewer than 40 new awards were made in the past week, compared to over 100 the previous week.

Tl;dr looks like the NIH still hasn’t gotten their money.
IMO you tough it out and bear the uncomfortable temperatures for half an hour like god intended. No need to be THAT pampered. A little discomfort builds character, etc.
I did not choose this. The thermostat in question was foisted on me by previous occupants.
My thermostat is a “smart” thermostat that can connect to the internet. No. I don’t need that. I just need it to regulate temperature in a limited/enclosed space. It shouldn’t need an app!
Trying to get some wiggles out before puppy class.

My dentist’s office is like…scary good at looking up and figuring out what my insurance covers and wha I might have to pay out of pocket. With everything else it’s like…”Surprise copay three weeks later!”
I think we have our answer as to what the new grant bottleneck is.
The best type of pie :)
The thing about being a sick, coughing mess is that well-meaning friends and family continue to ask whether you feel better and each day have to find a way to explain that no, you just feel horrid in new and exciting way.

This is Wiley. He has never seen snow before and wants to make sure he gets a real good look at it. For science. 12/10 (IG: smileywileydog)
It’s PhD admission season in the US and elsewhere. Is anyone collecting and sharing info about what admissions letters are saying this year, especially in the neuro/psych/bio space? Last year there were some (unfortunate) changes at some Unis, eg

Welp
In this particular case, I wanted to use the backbone we had with minimal changes because we know this one WORKS for making lentiviruses that will transduce a very difficult cell line. My philosophy was “touch as little as possible.” I have the construct I want now, but MAN.
You can also get very large gene fragments made for like thirty bucks nowadays. No point in wasting time with PCR and all that business.
Addendum to this: full plasmid sequencing is cheap, your time is not.
Weird duplications, swapped out promoters, point mutations galore…Trust nothing.
Please join Andreas Ladurner and me for the GRC Chromatin Structure and Function conference to be held near Barcelona Spain from May 31-June 5! We accepting abstracts for posters and talks. The meeting is preceded by an awesome GRS. Learn more in our video below and apply www.grc.org/chromatin-st...
PSA: Do not take your plasmids for granted. Sequence EVERYTHING. Trust no one.
PSA: If you no longer remember what the label on the tube means, it’s time to throw it out. (I’m talking about myself.)
So I guess we’re just doing this every year—waiting in horrified anticipation and hoping we each might get a scrap.
Please spread the word: the Structural Studies Division @mrclmb.bsky.social is looking for a new tenure-track, independent group leader with an exciting plan in any area of Structural (Molecular & Cell) biology, in discovery biology and/or methods development. 🥳

Not preparing for the next pandemic doesn't prevent pandemic from happening.

NEW: Another NIH institute director hasn't been renewed — the director of NIAMS (arthritis, musculoskeletal and skin diseases institute).
That leaves a whopping 15 of 27 institutes and centers without a permanent director.
I know it’s an overused phrase, but it really does feel like drinking from a firehose.
