NSF downsizes summer research program for undergraduates Many participants are from groups underrepresented in science

Due to the Musk/Trump Administration’s draconian cuts, the National Science Foundation is significantly scaling back its program to provide college students with paid summer research internships. Many of my colleagues attribute their start in science to this program.

5 Calls Spend 5 minutes. Make 5 calls. Make your voice heard.

Finally worked up the nerve to call my reps (when I knew I would get voicemail lolπŸ˜…) and it was not that bad. I adjusted the script they had to be more personal but it was helpful to have something to use as a base and all the phone numbers lined up for me.

So cute! I'm not sure if there's a species-specific name, but pāpaʻi iwi pūpū or unauna are Hawaiian names for hermit crabs in general

DEI statements really are not for minoritized ppl, literally the way IΚ»m contributing to DEI is just being me and for me that happens to incl some DEI-type work but that 100% shouldnΚ»t be an expectation for minoritized ppl but this prompt very hints it is

I wanted to try drawing my summer research species and had some fun with colors along the way

Both species can be called pipipi in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. The spotted guy is Neripteron neglectum and the stripey dude is Nerita picea

DLNR: only five Κ»Akikiki left, chances of survival are slim | Maui Now Only five of the native Hawaiian honeycreeper species, Κ»akikiki, are left in the wild and chances of saving them are growing increasingly dire by the day, according to state officials. This revelation was shared byΒ Justin Hite of the KauaΚ»i Forest Bird Recovery ProjectΒ during a community open house Tuesday evening.

"Literally, some of these species like Κ»akikiki and β€˜akeke’e’ on Kauaβ€˜i and kiwikiu on Maui could go extinct within months

My dad was in college by the time ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi was allowed in schools. It's been generations since anyone in my family was fluent. I'm so proud of the work people are doing to keep our language alive, but we are still very much feeling the hurt and loss from this law

Kūpaoa, also called naʻenaʻe (Dubautia menziesii), is endemic to the summit of Haleakalā. It can hybridize with ʻāhinahina, and can be used to scent kapa.
