A macro portrait, three-quarter profile, of the cephalothorax and partial abdomen and legs of a vinegaroon, a non-venomous arachnid that looks a bit like a mashup of a scorpion and a lobster. It is almost black with deep maroon highlights on the body and red-orange sparse hairs on the legs and thick, armored front claws (modified pedipalps). The photo is at night, and the surface of the vinegaroon is shiny from the damp conditions.

🐙🌿 Vinegaroons are arachnids that, like the Amblypygid I posted yesterday, look fierce but have no venom and are harmless to people. Also like Amblypygids, the 1st pair of legs is long & thin and used not for walking but as antennae. This one in Arizona recently was big, a couple of inches; here's--

Swimming through blue and orange colored water, a bird with orange-brown wings and a reflective green and black head soaks up bright sunlight. Its beak is very broad, almost shovel-like, hence its name, the Northern Shoveler.
