I googled to get a sense of what the hubbub is and found this gem of a first sentence:
Pretty crazy how important the blockade of a trade route is right now
Haha, I meant that they all go along with it not the price! I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than that for shoes but then again I haven’t needed to.
I never understand why they wait till the last minute for these decisions. Trauma because some governor has a flair for the dramatic.
At some point we’ll be an automated extractive Coruscant and that’ll be the evolutionary stage and it’s fine because everything is ultimately meaningless. But right now we’re still codependent with the land (and water) and being deliberate about that and preserving agrarian sensibilities is good.
Maybe this is generally known but tonight I realized that the last historical chapter of Du Bois’s The Suppression of the African Slave Trade is called “The Final Crisis” which is interesting.
Putin so obviously owns this man. If Iran is really such a point of contention for Putin I almost hope Trump is unable to back down and Putin dumps whatever he has on Trump and it becomes too much for even Congressional Republicans to stomach (both what he would release and that he had leverage).
Guy Numa and Sammy Zahran’s paper on Du Bois and stratification economics is now out at JEL!
I’ve really enjoyed getting to know Guy over the last year and a half as I’ve done my own work on Du Bois. He has a book coming out soon too.

Masterful gambit, sir
They’re neither scared nor untrained: they’re doing this on purpose.
In general this movie is more intense than I remember.
We’re watching Castaway tonight for the first time in probably like two decades and I was getting weird Moana vibes with the first failed attempt to get off the island and the second successful attempt.
Wilson as Hei Hei I guess.
Ugh my fourth grader has a field trip scheduled for the Kennedy Center and I really, really, really wish they just didn’t but it also doesn’t seem helpful for her not to go.
All things considered if we can ever pull off bringing dinosaurs back I still think we should go for it.
I desperately want to know how she ends up learning

William & Mary loved of old
Hark upon the gale,
Hear the thunder of our chorus

What just happened in Dallas County is one of the most blatant voter suppression operations I've ever seen—and it happened in a *primary*.
In March. Imagine November.
I broke it down here:

What the fuck is happening I feel like I’m going insane. How is any of this real?

God this is all so awful. And I’m seeing stuff that says U.S. casualties are much higher than reported but I don’t know what to believe.
It’s cliche but I was so angry about the Iraq war and it completely reshaped my politics and this still seems inconceivably 10x more outrageous than that.
In the midst of all this awfulness listen to this beautiful and insightful reflection on the role of storytelling and the privilege of being a storyteller (particularly a commercially successful one) from one of the greatest actors around.

More evidence that there will be a landslide in November, which is all the more reason why we should not compromise our principles in Virginia. We worked hard to get non partisan districting in the very recent past and we don’t need to abandon that to win the this.
Damn, he is furious
That’s wild. How would you even do that?
Let’s bracket off if it would make sense to do this. Assuming it makes sense conceptually (more sample does have its benefits after all), how would you even calculate it!?!
???? Whaaa? Editor or ref? Sounds like a quantitative ref that doesn’t m know what they’re talking about. If it’s an editor that’s sad.
“This matters to real people,” said Kareem Crayton, a lawyer and scholar for the Brennan Center for Justice. “If all of those settled understandings about who is responsible to you, who is accountable to you, are thrown into doubt, that’s not good for our democratic system.”
