A photograph of the main entrance to the Taylorian, on a sunny day. In the centre of the photo you can see the main door to the Taylorian, with a set of four steps coming down towards the front of the picture. A ramp goes down from the door to the right of the picture, and a white metal railing goes to the left. The rest of the photo is taken up by the large stone building, above and either side of the door. Green leaves on branches can be seen at the top of the picture, from the trees nearby.

๐Ÿฃ Have a lovely Easter Vacation! ๐ŸŒผ

Today is the last day of Hilary Term 2026!

And a bonus #TopTipThursTAY - don't forget to use your college libraries too! They can also purchase items you may need, and other colleges may be willing to let you look at a book if it's the only copy in Oxford!

And that's how you can use ILL Requests to access the resources you need!

Please remember however that this option is only open to University of Oxford members (& OUH Trust staff).

Requests are free, and you can have five active requests at one time!

If you'd like to keep an ILL for longer, contact the central Bodleian ILL team, or the library you borrowed the book from, so they can ask the lending library if they will allow a renewal.

When you want to return the book, return it to the library staff at the library you borrowed it from.

Please note however that with physical items:

๐Ÿ“š Whether the book is loanable or not is determined by the library who lends the book alongside the rules of the Bodleian Library it's sent to

๐Ÿ“šThe library who own the book will also decide its due date, and whether you will be allowed any renewals

How you'll receive your ILL:

Your request is processed by our team, and the item is then sent to us by a library that has accepted the request

Physical items: You will receive an email to tell you when it's arrived, and where you can pick it up from

Digital items: The scan will be emailed to you

A screenshot of the homepage of SOLO, our online catalogue. The website starts with a dark blue top bar, with the university logo and some drop down menus. Under this is a search bar, and under that are three large boxes, from left to right, filled with information. In the top bar is a button saying 'Need more?', and this is circled with a red circle A screenshot of the start of the ILL request form. Is it a white form, with black text, which is a bit too small to read. It shows the terms and conditions for an ILL, and has text boxes to include any details about the book that the reader would like to request.

How to request an ILL:

Log into SOLO, and click the 'Need more?' button in the top, dark blue bar

This will bring up the request form. Fill in the details of the item you would like to access, what format you would like it in, and, for physical items, where you would like to pick it up or read it

Do you only need a singular article or chapter of a book?
An ILL can be a great option! You can usually be provided with a scan of these (if it's within copyright restrictions), which can be delivered quickly, kept forever and read anywhere!

How long will you need to use it? ILL's will only be here for a few months, whereas a purchased item will remain in the Bodleian

Do you need to use the book outside the library? Some ILL's can only be used within a library, whereas purchased items are more likely to be loanable (but not always)

Should you request a purchase ๐Ÿ’ฐ, or an ILL ๐Ÿ“—?

There are pros and cons to each option, especially when you'd like to look at a whole book.

Do you need to use it soon? ILL's will arrive faster than a purchase request, as they don't need to go through the processing a new book would

Inter-library requests Order material to the Bodleian Libraries that is held by external libraries.

The Bodleian's full policy on ILLs can be found at the link below, but for this weeks #TopTipThursTAY, we'll break down how you can request these items, and how and where you can use them.

What is an Inter Library Loan (ILL)? ๐Ÿ“˜

An ILL (also referred to as an Inter Library Request) is a book that belongs to another, non-Bodleian library, that they will send to us for a reader to use in Oxford.

It's a worldwide scheme, with lots of libraries in different sectors taking part!

Need to read to a book that's not in the Bodleian's collections?

If you're a University of Oxford member, you can either:

๐Ÿ“–Request the Bodleian purchases a copy, using the 'Request purchase' form on SOLO

OR

๐Ÿ“–Request an Inter Library Loan- which is the topic of today's #TopTipThursTAY!

A poster advertising the free book event. The background of the poster is a photograph of a large dark wooden bookcase filled with books. a photo of an aisle in the second floor stack at the Taylorian library, shot from about halfway down the aisle facing one of the arched windows overlooking St Giles. There is an empty desk in the centre of the frame and books filling the shelves on both sides.

A library user once said they didn't like working in the second floor stack because it "smelled like old books". To each their own, but we love the smell of books old and new!

Happy #WorldBookDay to all who celebrate!

An image of a biographical blurb about Olena Stiazhkina, with her photograph. The text on the sign reads: 'Olena is a well-known Ukrainian writer and historian, who has published eleven works of fiction in Ukrainian and Russian, and numerous articles and book on modern Ukrainian history, as well as being a prolific commentator in Ukrainian and international media. She was the second Ukrainian fellow in virtual residence. She is currently leading research fellow at the institute of history of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, having previously been professor of Slavic History in the University of Donetsk until the 2014 occupation of the city. An image of a biographical blurb about Oleksandr Mykhed, with his photograph. The text on the sign reads: 'Oleksandr Mykhed was the Faculty's Ukrainian virtual writer in residence during 2022-2023. The position was created as an act of academic solidarity and a way of giving a voice to colleagues in Ukraine, establishing what the faculty hopes to be a productive dialogue. Andrey Kurkov, the president of PEN Ukraine, says of him: 'Oleksandr is one of the prominent Ukrainian writers of the younger generation'. Olekasner lived in Kyiv until March 2022 and is now enlisted in the Ukrainian armed forces. The Language of War was inspired by his work during an online residency at the University of Oxford.

The faculty of Modern Languages created the post of virtual writer-in-residence to promote the voices of Ukrainian authors.
