A simple German woodcutting from 1490 showing a Renaissance dude on the right who is having a lower back spasm so bad his right shoe was blown clean off. On the left is a witch (โ€œeine Hexe") with a bow and arrow who just shot him in the back. (Otherwise, why would his back hurt? Hexenschuss!) The engraving is credited to Johann Zainer as was taken from the book โ€œTractatus von den bรถsen weibern, die man hexen nennt,โ€ or โ€œTreatise on evil women, who are called witches,โ€œ by Ulrich Molitor.

The Czech word for lower back pain or lumbago is hexenลกus, which is borrowed from a German word, Hexenschuss.
The first time I heard it I was like, โ€œOh, like a witch just shot you in the back? Thatโ€™s what you think happened?โ€
Dear reader, at one point, thatโ€™s exactly what they thought.

I've not had a Tun beer before. This Little Monster session NZ IPA is excellent. Highly recommended by the barman at The Swan, York and deservedly so.

March has arrived, and with it comes longer, lighter days. Over the next few weeks most of us will enjoy around two extra hours of daylight โ˜€๏ธ

The foreground features two pint glasses filled with best bitter, topped with a thin layer of frothy white foam, with lacing down each glass (in tighter rings on the left pint glass). They are sitting on a dark, circular table in a traditional pub.

Went to the pub last night. We had some pints and talked about the darts. Take a look at that lacing (and how my mini sips compare to Neilโ€™s mega gulps)

It was such a lovely atmosphere at @thefreetradeinn.bsky.social - packed with everyone whoโ€™d been at the Brewers Journal Lectures. Nipped into Mosaic Tap before going to a gig and spied several people wearing Kasteel bucket hats, so I think Mean Eyed Cat had a good one, too!

Still TBC for tomorrow

The Porterโ€™s Table, London: A brand extension too far for Guinness โ€” restaurant review The grill restaurant in Covent Gardenโ€™s new brewery-meets-merch shop has all the charm of a new-build hotel

For todayโ€™s @ftweekend.com I am at The Porterโ€™s Table inside the ยฃ73million Guinness Brewery development in Londonโ€™s Covent Garden. And despite some okay cooking, wondering whether an overblown marketing exercise can really produce a good restaurant (TLDR: no)

It was 10 years ago this week that we got the keys to Unit 5 Marino Way, and we're planning to celebrate in style over the coming months, including some fantastic collaborations and a big party at the brewery in May (keep 'em peeled for details!).
