Three logos in a row, on the left the Adidas logo, on the right the Bass beer logo, in the middle my amalgamation. It has the red triangle of bass chopped into 3 sections like the Adidas logo, slightly offset. The text underneath says adibass, in the curly cursive handwriting of the bass logo

Couldn't get the idea of adibass out of my head 🔺🔺🔺

A group of women posing enthusiastically in front of the tanks in First & Last brewery. They are dressed in casual, warm clothing, with several people smiling and raising their arms in celebration.

Happy #IWCBD from First & Last Brewery in Northumberland!

A photo from Friday night at Indie Beer Feast - Jules Gray (organiser of Sheffield Beer Week and the festival), me, Steve Lamond and Ian Garret

A fun few hours at the lovely Indie Beer Feast last night, loved chatting with Jules about the scene now vs back when it all started. It was great to hear how the European Beer Bloggers Conference 2012 in Leeds was such a lodestone event for many

36 Hours in Bologna, Italy: Things to Do and See (Gift Article) While Emilia-Romagna’s capital still thrives on traditions like tagliatelle al ragù and mortadella, new openings are taking the city in refreshing directions.

Travel articles usually take about a month to write & edit. This might be my record: I got back home late on a Sunday; 10 days + 5 hours later, “36 Hours in Bologna, Italy” went live on @nytimes.com.
Great food, beer (Ca’ del Brado!) art & more.

Last weekend, I had the honor of attending the Barcelona Beer Challenge 2026, one of the most prestigious international beer competitions.
As an International Beer Judge, I found the event exceptionally well-run—possibly the best-organized competition I've attended so far! Just wow! ¡Muchas gracias

A simple German woodcutting from 1490 showing a Renaissance dude on the right who is having a lower back spasm so bad his right shoe was blown clean off. On the left is a witch (“eine Hexe") with a bow and arrow who just shot him in the back. (Otherwise, why would his back hurt? Hexenschuss!) The engraving is credited to Johann Zainer as was taken from the book “Tractatus von den bösen weibern, die man hexen nennt,” or “Treatise on evil women, who are called witches,“ by Ulrich Molitor.

The Czech word for lower back pain or lumbago is hexenšus, which is borrowed from a German word, Hexenschuss.
The first time I heard it I was like, “Oh, like a witch just shot you in the back? That’s what you think happened?”
Dear reader, at one point, that’s exactly what they thought.
