În primul număr al ziarului Romanul, apărut la 9/21 august 1857 sub direcţia lui C. A. Rosetti, se începea publicarea în foileton a unui roman intitulat Omul muntelui. Autorul, care semna Doamna L. şi care-şi subintitula opera „romantz original“, avea, probabil, raţiuni puternice să păstreze discreţie în jurul adevăratului său nume. Romanul, cuprinzînd 12 capitole, este publicat în întregime în ziarul Romanul între 9/12 august 1857 şi 12/24 februarie 1858, în cursul anului 1858 este tipărit, sub aceeaşi semnătură, în volum.

On Arcanum there’s an isolated 1975 mention in a Romanian newspaper, part of a serialized Romanian translation of Duke Ellington’s autobiography. Otherwise the term shows up in the early 1990s.
