About 4 hours into Wheel World, and Iโ€™m really enjoying it. It doesnโ€™t necessarily do anything unique mechanically, but it shows how far a focus on moment-to-moment feel, simple but well-paced progression, and solid art can get you.

So true. I feel like #1 might actually be โ€œstruggled in school (except for that one subject)โ€. I meet so many people in games that were far from straight A students, but are savants at their one or few things.

The goal is iterative development, but capturing your intent and learnings as you go has valuable. Honestly itโ€™s been most useful to me 5 years down the road when Iโ€™m looking to update an old game or remembering why we did something.

Creating a comprehensive GDD early in the project is definitely an antiquated process. Even more so for solo or small teams. However I have found that developing โ€œ1-pagersโ€ as I go, and then collecting them in a central source of truth for other disciplines and external partners has been valuable.

1. Have a mental image of the experience you want.
2. Build a system.
3. Roughly tune it to show hints of the experience you desire.
4. Playtest it yourself.
5. Can *you* spot opportunities that support the experience?
6. Reveal the experience via feedback, culling, amplifying
