So a little bit of serious time I’m in desperate need of dental work to remove extra teeth. Yes, extra teeth, my jaw is too small and currently, wisdom teeth that honestly were never expected to arrive have started to erupt, and now my mouth is in significant pain. Talking for now is manageable, eating a little less so. My current options are: 6k for full oral surgery, or 400 dollars to put a bandaid on the problem with a single extraction. A significant disparity, I know. I’m not happy about it. I don’t feel comfortable setting a goal for such a large amount, and I am trying to see if there are further options. In the interim, I am asking for help in the form of the following: 1. Firstly, fascism is so pervasive in clothing/fashion because that pervasiveness IS the point. The following is an extremely compressed historical summary. Mussolini deliberately wanted to create an "Italian Fashion" in order to spread the ideology across the world, with the “popularization” of the “Black Shirt” then trickling down into the uniforms of the Nazi party. Both dictators (Mussolini and Hitler) desired to create a fashion “industry” outside of French influence. This then evolved into the numerous variations in fascist uniform, because the point WAS and STILL IS to subsume everything, every aspect of life was integrated into the “ideal”.

Therefore, these uniforms are not “harmless relics” of a “bygone era”, which is a gross glossing-over of the second world war, but a vehicle used to perpetuate bigoted, violent, and genocidal means of thought. By making them “fashionable” or rather, the more accurate term, marketable, then it becomes socially desirable, simplified: people want to be a part of it due to shared belief or even to wear the clothes to feel “included” and so on. It is the selling of thought through clothing/imagery. It is deliberately, purposefully designed to proliferate and spread itself. You cannot have an outfit connected to or referencing fascist ideals solely because "it looks cool", outside of being morally incorrect, that thought process lacks critical thinking. You've fallen into the very trap set for you.

Whether an individual holds those same beliefs or not, wearing the clothing communicates that they do, THAT'S the issue. “If it walks like a duck” then becomes “If it dresses like a fascist, it is a fascist”, because that is what the outfit is communicating. The caps, coats, and their variations CANNOT be removed from the intention because the intent is literally woven into the clothing itself.

Much like the media we consume, we have to approach our clothing critically, whether it's an outfit we actually wear or something we dress our characters in. When it comes to designing fashion or even just constructing an outfit from our own closets, we have to assess the WHY of what we are wearing and what our clothing is communicating to others. Granted this is barely touching the surface of the issue, fashion's issues with cultural appropriation, and overall problematic engagement with the world around it. That is to say we should not be paranoid of our clothing, or be so consumed by accidentally setting off dog whistles that we lose the joy of creating outfits, as aforementioned, we merely need to approach the topic of fashion and design from a critical angle, and do our due diligence to research use of shape, color, and accessories.
