Snow Days Under Socialism What would winter look like in a world where human needs trumped private profits?

"What if people didn’t get one paid snow day during big storms — much better than what most workers have currently — but got three? One day to help clear the snow, one day to check on your neighbors, and one day to play — to actually enjoy one of the earth’s greatest gifts."

Let's make sure referenda dollars end up where voters wanted them, with students and frontline workers in classrooms not with a bloated Administration. Show your support for a full cost of living adjustment (2.63%) on July 1, 2026, for all frontline workers.

Guess What Moderate Democratic Voters Aren’t Anymore? Moderate. Two new polls suggest that moderate Democrats too want higher taxes on the rich and some measure of economic populism. Moderate isn’t what it was in 1992.

Mar 12, 2023

On this day March 12th, in 1881, Daniel Hoan was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin. A seven-term mayor of Milwaukee, Hoan's 24-year administration stands as the longest continuous Socialist administration in U.S. history.

Hoan's first election was in 1910, in which he successfully ran for city attorney on the Socialist ticket. He worked to get lower fares and better service from the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company, which gained him the popular support to win reelection in 1914.

Two years later, Hoan ran for mayor, winning his first of seven mayoral elections as a Socialist.

Though he rarely had a Socialist majority to work with, Hoan fought tirelessly for progressive change in Milwaukee. One of his first major acts was ensuring that working class people could afford food during World War I. From 1917-1920, Hoan arranged for food and other necessities to be sold through temporary markets and city offices, all operated by public officials. "The public sale of food by me has offered an opportunity of demonstrating the Socialist theory of operating a business," said Hoan. Over the years, Hoan earned a reptation as an honest, efficient and community-minded politician. Some of his many accomplishments include enacting city-sponsored youth recreation programs, investing in health inspections and public vaccination initiatives, pioneering the country's first public housing project and gaining municipal ownership of Milwaukee's stone quarry, sewage disposal and water purification.

After being defeated by newcomer Carl Zeidler in the 1940 Milwaukee mayoral election, Hoan left the Socialist Party and worked with Democrats to regain control of Wisconsin from the Republican Party. After a string of unsuccessful election runs, Hoan retired from politics in 1952 and committed himself to the Milwaukee Harbor Commission. The Hoan Bridge is named in his honor.

Daniel Hoan died on June 11, 1960. We remember him as an icon of the political left who promoted era of progressivism in Milwaukee, fighting for what he envisioned as, "a better, bigger and brighter city."

Our pressure is working! Thousands of New Yorkers are demanding more funding for public renewables, and the state legislature is listening. Now we need to bring the pressure to @governor.ny.gov who so far is insisting on raising our utility rates with even more natural gas!

Happy International Women's Day, comrades. 🌹 Today we celebrate the innumerable contributions women have made to the movement for the liberation of all people—revolutionaries, fighters, theorists, artists, liberators and mothers.

Commemorating women's role in both the February and October Revolution, the Soviet Union made the holiday official in 1921

IWD spread across the globe, celebrated by comrades everywhere

8 марта Today the holiday has been co-opted by capitalism, removing its revolutionary character

But we must never forget where it came from, must never forget the women who fought and died for a better world

Today and every day we fight against patriarchy

We fight against capitalism

We fight for socialism

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

IS A

SOCIALIST HOLIDAY The first "Women's Day" was celebrated by the Socialist Party of America in 1909 in NYC by labor organizer Theresa Malkiel

Coming off the heels of the suffragette movement, the day marked that the struggle against patriarchy and capitalism are intertwined

SOCIALIST PARTY WORKERS of the WORLD UNITE! The first "International Women's Day" to be celebrated on March 8th was in 1914, primarily in the German Empire, fighting for women's right to vote

Their movement would ignite a fire throughout the nation, leading to the February Revolution which ended the monarchy
